Just for fun, who has done the most mileage in their Zed between MOTs?

My total was 28,778 - here's the proof

Who can beat that?

Yes, because I'm getting the use from my Zed, whilst others are deteriorating from lack of use :)

I'll be at the bottom of pile, 4.5k covered in 6 years and nudging 26,000 miles, poor Zed is terrible through lack of use, a day doesn't pass that something doesn't fall off :)

Tim.

I'd be interested in the Z3s with the highest mileage overall on their clocks. I'd wager that this generation of relatively straightforward and normally aspirated BMW engines are capable of very high mileages. Not like their younger BMW cousins with stories of failed timing chains, twitchy turbos and "software problems" causing injectors and coils to fail

Why?? :?

What a waste of a car!

It is not as if a low mileage one is likely to appreciate and become a good investment

Tim, get your Zed out on the A51 for a blast up to my place and we can compare stone chips! :)

It's a car, it's meant to be driven!

This is an interesting thread and one that sparks different opinions. I do find it odd the number of Zeds that are used only for 200 miles a year (including my new M by the previous owners)

These engines are bullet proof; the engine in my 2.0l is the same as was in my '52 tourer and that had done over 200k by the time I traded it in and according to the garage was "just getting warm"

I do understand the thought process of keeping the investment but ultimately a decision has to be made that you either buy a 4 wheel ISA or you buy a great car......

It is each to their own, and I am not saying either is right or wrong but my option is that my 2.0l has 145k on it and my m has 85k on it. The 2.0 will be sold shortly to some lucky new owner who can happily put another 147k on it while I will happily put another 85k on my new one. The price of either will not diminish because they are BMW; they are quality build; quality reputation, and quality owners... We know their value and we enjoy them.

As I say, each to their own, but personally I could never sacrifice the smile on my face against the view of my z in a garage under a cover....

I'm jealous of the OP. I've done much more than 28,000 miles, but 50,000 have been in an Escort van  .

The problem with Z3s (if it is a problem) is that they have mostly been bought by people as 2nd cars and are not used very much. Because they are low mileage and quite rarely seen on the road, people think they will be a valuable investment.

The reason they are not seen very often is that they are sat in garages not being driven.

How many Z3s do you think there still are? Bear in mind that the youngest is now over 10 years old. A few thousand? Five thousand? Ten thousand?...

Over 18,000...

http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=bmw+z3

Original data can be found here...

http://www.dft.gov.uk/statistics/series ... licensing/

And the number has not been dropping significantly as they get older. Why not? Because they are pampered. Until the number drops below a thousand, I don't think there is any point in not driving them. There will always be low mileage examples, but I don't think anyone will get much more than £5k for a non-M Z3 for the next 20 years.

In 2003, there were around 22,000, there are now 18,000. 3,000 (<15%) reduction in the 10 years since production ended. Assuming 500 per year (not the existing 300) being lost, it will be another 34 years before there are less than 1,000 left.

I like to see a spotless car in a museum, but unless you are Jay Leno or Mr Haynes, get them driven 8-) .

There's a local lad here with a 2.8...and going on 600,000kms plus. The motor still ticks over as smooth as ever...and he's not selling... :D

Yep - I've noticed on the US forums that they seem to relate to 200,000 miles in the same way that we relate to 100,000. :)

Ive done 10k in my M since November 2011..

It's done 0 miles since Oct.. But I'm itching to get it taxed and back on the road :D

I'm a believer that these cars sat in a garage doesn't do them much good..

They do need to be used regularly and fluids kept fresh with oil changes every year regardless of milage covered.

It costs about 1/3rd of a tank of fuel to tax it for a day (and you get upto 30 days free). Because it's all online now, you can tax it and pay for 6 months. Print off the confirmation. SORN it. The SORN starts on the 1st of next month - NOT immediately. You will get a cheque for 5 months tax within a few days. If you have more than one month off per year, you are quids in :D .

Why is it a waste? I enjoy the Zed everytime its driven so no difference, depends on how many cars you have at your disposal

Stone chips? what are those? :)
