Z3 stays :o) Z4 goes :o(
Hi all,
Haven't ventured much on here of late As some of you know I was planning on replacing the Z3 with something more practical, nearly ended up with a VW Up Anyways I just couldn't do it, still love the Z3 after 6 years, so today have placed an order for an M135i and will be trading in the Z4. Delivery possibly June.
So my Z3 has been reprieved and can hear him breath a sign of relief as I type
Tim.

Congratulations Tim. Nice combination - a practical hatchback? version (albeit a fast one) and a small "impractical" 2-seater soft-top.
Re: Z3 stays :o) Z4 goes :o(
Thanks guys,
I was looking at allsorts of little hatchbacks to replace the Z3 with, VW Up, Hyundais, Suzukis then saw my BMW dealer is doing a special offer on M135is at the mo on the same monthly I'm currently shelling out on the Z4, passing visit and deal was done
Have mixed feelings on the E89, some good some not so good.

On the E89 for me the engine, its not a nice one when cold, its not refined enough for a BMW IMHO. I had a new 1 Series as a loaner recently, only a 118d Sport and when I got back in the Z4 I was quite surprised how much sharper the F20 is to drive which made the Z4 feel slightly underwhelming. Its not all bad, its one of the best looking cars on the road for the money and interior is a lovely place to be but as a drivers car something is definitely missing.

Re: Z3 stays :o) Z4 goes :o(
You will love the 1 Series, Tim. I've recently bought a new F20 myself, a 116D Efficient Dynamics. It's a stunning car for the money, I really rate it. I'm sure you've made a good choice. Like you, I couldn't part with my Z3 though, I love it every time I'm behind the wheel, even after 4 years.

I reckon you didn't like the majority of fellow Z4 owners/forums.....
Well done in keeping the Z3, welcome home..... you are forgiven!

Z3 2.8 Progress Journal (Mine)
Z3 1.9 Sport Progress Journal (Wifey's)
I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

Sad to see you trading the Z4, the M135 is a cracking car which I'm sure will put a smile on your face every time you drive it, loads of power. Nice to see you keeping the Z3, I'm still loving my Z4 which I use as a daily driver. Having said that, after five years of owning the Z3 it would be very difficult to part with it it still puts a big smile on my face every time I drive it. Enjoy the new car when you take delivery.

Hmmm. Thinking of an E89 Z4 some time in the future.TitanTim wrote:

Which engine does your Z4 have?

Its the N20 2.0 4cyl but the 1.8 and the 2.8 are the same but with different mapping and injectors. Its a common engine now used throughout the model range. Just Google BMW N20 engine noise.Tufarlian wrote:Hmmm. Thinking of an E89 Z4 some time in the future.TitanTim wrote:

Partly why I've gone for the 6cyl in the 1 Series.

Sounds a bit bobbins
I'm off to see my mates new 428 this week, I hope it sounds better than that especially after I talked him into a Beemer and away from the Audi fastback thing

Ah ok. I've always liked the straight 6's so am hoping it'll be the 3.0 for me.TitanTim wrote:

I think the noise is down to the high pressure injectors, its fine with the bonnet shut('_')Z3 wrote:Sounds a bit bobbins

Everyone's opinion is different but personally I also think you have done the right thing. I always think the Z3 was made to have movie looks (reminds me of the bat mobile in the Michael Keaton film) but was maybe made with a little less thought than was required (after all it is 2 cars together essentially and how many different tweaks in 6 years - even the vanity mirror points at the passenger!!) - but it is a smashing car and I love it
The z4 always seemed to me to be passionless (just my opinion) in its looks.... Although to be fair, BMW went through a passionless look phase for the majority of the 2000's (again just my opinion)
....the exception? The new model of the Z4 - that is one great looking motor

Re: Z3 stays :o) Z4 goes :o(
To be honest I wouldn't like to own the E89 outside its warranty, its a pretty complicated car especially the roof with loads to potentially go wrong. Having said that its still one of the best looking cars on the road by far within its price range which I shall certainly miss, it always gets complimentary comments something I won't get with F21. However the engine will make up for that

Tim - sorry for delay! 12 months and 5000 miles in now; I find the car to be pretty good, power and noise are superb, handling is good but takes a little getting used to with non RFTs and adaptive. I'm still not convinced the recommended pressures offer the best driving experience. There are a few irritating points about trim quality - arm rest rattles, boot carpet is thin and flimsy, parcel shelf too. But.....................most of those things are long forgotten when you press the start button, select sport, enage the gears and hit the open road.
Read the spec of yours on BabyBMW and bar the obvious 3 door and colour options, you've got nearly identical options to mine the only difference being you comfort access and I have visibility pack.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it - I know I do!

No problem and thanks for the feedback I'm hoping delivery will be within the next 2 weeks so trying to run the Z4 on fumes at the mo and avoiding any fuel stops. Really looking forward to getting the 1er and hoping it won't be any worse quality wise than the Z4 which has a few dissapointments in that dept. Just counting the days692DPG wrote:Tim - sorry for delay! 12 months and 5000 miles in now; I find the car to be pretty good, power and noise are superb, handling is good but takes a little getting used to with non RFTs and adaptive.
