Chrome Tail Pipes and "GB" badging

Posted: Tue 28 Apr, 2009 18:26
by Titan
Opinions please:

In a different threadsmartypants suggested swapping the black tail pipes for chrome tips.
Also, as we are going to Francein the summer, I need to get a "GB" badge on the rear end.

I hate "europlates" (and 95% of the time don't need them either)
Any thoughts or comments on chrome pipes/black pipes and position of the "GB"
I've shown a couple of my initial thoughts but wondered if there are any sneaky tricks to be had :?: :?:

With the rest of the letters?

What's anybody else done?

I think one of these would look good on the back of a Z;

TBH - I'm not a big fan of the GB badging, can't you get away without it? Or at least just a spare set of number plates with GB on the side?

As for the exhaust, I'd say Chrome tips will better suit your car!

Not sure about avoiding it altogether but the spare plate  is a good idea.
Thanks Yalden :cheers

Jury's out at the moment - a bit of black compliments the outside of the propeller, the aerial and Micky Mouse.
I wonder what a chrome Micky would look like....... :?:

Chrome pipes all the way. 8-)
As for the GB badging - I think they don't belong on a german car that much. But this is european speaking. :D
I think they look cool on a classic british roadster though. 8-) True, Z3 does look really retro, and it sure does make sence if a brit is driving it... ;)
Was thinking of putting a small Union Jack instead of GB to the boot - I am a huge fan of GB, but then decided against it.
I will put it on a suitcase that seats on the boot. :D

Chrome pipes all the way and as for the GB badge, I'd get a spare set of plates with the Euro GB. They might not be aesthitically pleasing but are the neatest way of keeping legal.

As far as I can see, your plates are screwed on and swapping them for a holiday wouldn't be too much of an issue.

I certainly wouldn't want to spoil the back of the car with a GB badge and as for chrome GB letters, they look okay on an old British sports car You surely don't want to confuse your motor with an old MGB, do you?

Hi Titan - as I said before chrome tips is such a low cost, little effort "mod" that makes a surprising improvement to the Zed!

Here's my old Zed with and without them...

@Spants: you sold it??? Such a pretty example??? Sorry to hear that, I'm sure you miss it. :(
About the GB badge - is this a must when visiting EU countries? If so, you could also buy a magnet GB plate and so you can remove it in a sec...

Sadly so AP, and yep it was a fantastic example of a Z3! I miss it loads, but good times were had :)

I would also like the answer to that question, I didnt think it was anymore?

Probably because you don't have a GB in the blue ribbon space on the plate - almost every EU country has it. No biggie, they look far better without the blue space. :D

EU countries require evidence of vehicle domicile.
Europlates satisfy this which is how I believe the myth that "you don't need a GB badge" started. (Yellow stars on blue can be substituted for GB, F, D, E etc)

Thanks for the with and without pictures smartypants.
As I hate the blue stripe europlates, I'm going to try the chrome option adjacent to the boot lock:

As for the chrome tips, I thinkg they need to be seen "in the flesh" so to speak. Suppose I could try kitchen foil for effect
Hope to get to Newby Hall so may get a comparison there

Since you allready have chromed gills, chrome tail pipes are the only possible choice m8. And they look fab!
Been there, done that.

No problem at all Titan. I wasn't sure either about getting them, especially as I don't like modding cars at all - I want it as it came out of the factory :)

Best thing I did though, I don't think you'll be disappointed - and even if you dont like it you can put the black ones back on! They are only £30 from a $tealer, and I'm sure you could gets most of your money back on here for them ;)

Hi James
No I didn't so no pics - sorry
I did try wrapping them in tinfoil to get a visual impression (but the turkey got in the way) :P
It's one of those personal things - the black tips (they are black covers not the straight exhaust) give their own flavour to the car's rear.
The chrome wasn't sufficient of an improvement for me to warrant the change.

GB badge, Halford do small chrome lettering (3 for £5), I have just returned from Spain, i used these with no problem, they are only about 1" high and look OK on the car.

Technically they are not legal but you are unlikely to be challenged.
I eventually opted for a new rear number (euro) plate and simply took it off when we got home.
No legality issues and no marks on the paintwork

Crome letters are strictly NOGO - come on mate - get a set europlates and make the car look nice - crome letters will look rubbish.

Maybe you don't like the EU - but what would good old GB do without it....

I could understand if yuo all said that you hate different coloured plates (white/yellow) - Not that's really stupid in my opinion!

2 different coloured plates: UK, France... any one else but WHY?!

Here in DK we also have a type of 2 tone plates yellow / white - for commercial vehicles with VAT paid....

It's all a matter of personal choice.
Having white front plates and yellow rear plates is bad enough without having a blue stripe on the left as well.
Since I am not obliged to display any symbol whilst in the UK, I choose so no to do.
It doesn't make me "right" or "wrong", but it does make me happy

billz, thanks I will have a look at the pics :)
Titan, I understand you sticking with the dark side but you never mentioned how the turkey turned out :?

I have spent some time sat polishing my pipes, ignoring the strange looks from the neighbours, they are the black tips and look ok and have more than likely been there from new so would be difficult to remove, so I will stick with the dark side for now......unless billz's pics can convert me.

billz when can I have my orange juice back? :D

classic :D

Please please please don't put a chrome gb badge on your car, it's not going to make it look any classier than it already is. Just travel with your existing plates, i've crossed europe 3 times on standard plates and no stickers and never had any trouble.
