Thanks Gaz, the end is sort of in sight but I'm dreading the crucial lense cutting.

Managed to get the wiring all sorted, i'm overjoyed by the OEM fit and appearance. Everything slotted in place with OEM style connectors etc. so I can switch back to standard lights with ease. I'll take a pic of the engine bay when its all finished.
Trial fit of one headlight:
Both headlights fitted
Beam pattern
Tomorrow i'll be taking the lights back off, dismantling and readjusting...

Re: Shantybeater's Titanium S54 - BMWCar Mag+Xenon Retrofit
Ok another whole afternoon spent on the lights and we are getting close to the end!!
Finished lining up the lights on the car, had to take them off, rebake, disassemble, adjust main reflectors (they were out of line and too high). After all this I refitted and tested, removed and got going with the dreaded hole saw. Ended up being alot easier than I thought. 68mm was perfect, it gave me room to sand down to the exact right size (about 45mins with sandpaper per headlight!) and slot in to place. First one reassembled:
Current state of the front room!

Re: Shantybeater's Titanium S54 - BMWCar Mag+Xenon Retrofit
Looking great! Received my brackets today and can't wait to get started. Do you think it would give a smarter look if you put some aluminium foil behind the reflector, to match the high beam?
I see you didn't plug the adjuster back in? The chrome trim needs to make way for the angel eyes, or do you plan on repainting them?

Re: Shantybeater's Titanium S54 - BMWCar Mag+Xenon Retrofit
Cheers sledgehammer, i'm currently re-priming them now and will try my best to hunt down some chrome spray paint - if not i'll be going with titanium silver to match the bodywork. The angel eyes won't fit in the grooves I don't think. I plan on getting them back together then deciding on AE's as i'm still not sure if they are OEM enough for me. I did ditch the aiming plug in the end, the lens is completely flush with the projector so they can't move anyway!
P.S I was wondering about aluminium foil, or possibly a thin piece of aluminium shaped behind the lens, might give it a try and see?

Thanks its not totally out of the question but I need to get them checked out at an MOT test center for road worthiness. Plus the whole ordeal takes 8-10 hours at best and wouldn't be cheap (£75 for brackets from U.S, full HID kit with harness and projectors - £250~ plus whatever labour on top) Headlights sell for between £160-£200 on ebay second hand or £300 each from bm-miniparts.Althulas wrote:Looking good James so when are you offering a fitting service for these:D

Brian, good idea but I imagine the projectors get pretty hot so it would need to be heat proof. It would definately work well for the chrome rings. A bit late for me though as I've painted mine titanium silver. The finish isn't perfect but it will do for now:Brian H wrote:These have turned out great, I have been watching your progress, great job.

Ok well i'm all finished!
A quick pic of the wiring to give you an idea of the connections etc..
Fitted, lined up etc..
Normal beam
High Beam (with Bi-xenon high)
Engine bay with a small advertisement for TRS -It all looks very OEM don't you think? no obvious out of place cables! (edit: ignore the silver ballast cable on the right - its been tucked in!)
Ballasts in place
Comments welcome, good or bad!!

Could you cover the painted trim with a led strip to make a type of angel eye? Do the hid auto level for the mot?

Hey Bro,
Looks stunning, best xenon retrofit I've seen as looks most genuine.
Only problem I'd have is the difference in colour between side lights and dipped beam... but have seen people use leds that match well!!
Guess I'll keep my s50 as OEM as can and you can go the modifying route!
Can't wait to unwrap mine from the garage when I get back! Will be like all my Christmases coming at once!
Tris.

Re: Shantybeater's S54 - BMWCar Mag+Xenon Retrofit finished!
Us lot with the M's have headlight washers but no self levelling. The new MOT regs state something along these lines:Althulas wrote:Could you cover the painted trim with a led strip to make a type of angel eye? Do these hid auto level for the mot?
"If your car has an aftermarket Xenon/HID headlamp kit fitted, the system must have both a headlamp wash and self-levelling capabilities, although self-levelling suspension will suffice. However, certain high-performance cars have ‘barely any luggage space and stiff suspension’ and these appear to be exempt from needing self-levelling systems."
I think its a grey area so it depends how the MOT center wants to percieve it, I will be taking mine in to check beam alignment and legality etc..
As for the side trims, the Angel eyes really fit best inside the chrome strips. I think any LED strip may look too modern so slightly aftermarket? not saying it wouldnt look good it just wont be quite so in keeping with the date of the zed

Re: Shantybeater's S54 - BMWCar Mag+Xenon Retrofit finished!
Cheers bro, I thought the same but i'm pretty sure some newer models have halogen dipped beam and xenon sides. Essentially the halogen dipped beam is no longer needed as the bi-xenon does it on its own so could be removed.tcrichton wrote:Hey Bro,

Are these hight adjustable i.e. compatible to the stock headlight beam high control so the Germany TÜV won't notice immediately?

Re: Shantybeater's S54 - BMWCar Mag+Xenon Retrofit finished!
A little update, managed to get hold of a strongstrut rear strut brace which was fitted tonight:
Not had a chance to take it for a drive yet, I have to say ground clearance has reduced slightly so fingers crossed it doesn't cause me any grief on speed humps etc..
I also popped into the MOT center to check my lights, good news is the beam pattern/position is absolutely perfect on the drivers side, unfortunately the passenger side needs to come off as its a few mil out. I am thinking about taking them both off and trying foil or similar to put behind the lenses anyway. I also asked about self levelling systems and he showed me the updated changes. It states 'self levelling systems may be present on HID equipped vehicles, where present it must not be defective/malfunctioning'. It also stated 'self-levelling systems might be not be possible to check, in this case the benefit of the doubt will be given.' He said as it stands the car will pass an MOT and at most an advisory issued.

Will be interesting to see what you think of the butt strut.
I have one which came with the car. The previous two owners had both tried it and took it off due to ground clearance issues so I've never bothered fitting it back on.

If the but strut doesn't come any lower than the exhaust cat you might be OK, I scraped the exhaust on the drive last week as normally I drop my passenger off before parking on the drive, was a bit surprised it scraped but with the extra weight of a passenger was enough

Re: Shantybeater's S54 - BMWCar Mag+Xenon Retrofit finished!
I've found that ground clearance has been ok on my 17" std wheels and unmodded suspension apart from the worst of over sized sleeping do gooders. Interesting info about the MOT stance on HID though, I thought it was going to be a lot more stringent than your findings James.

Interesting comments, will have to wait and see how much of a burden it is, I've owned heavily lowered cars in the past so it doesn't concern me too much, I may just to adjust my driving style to suit

A quick pic in the wild from last weekend:
The strut brace has caused no problems for me at all, I'm quite a careful driver over speed bumps etc.. but its not grounded out once so very happy. I also drove back from Sussex late the weekend before last and can report back that the bi-xenons are working a treat, the improved visibility is astounding. The little projectors popping out refreshes the frontend as well (imo!)
P.S Brian H - Thanks for the chrome vinyl idea, i've decided to buy some and give it a try, If it doesn't work i'll be properly spraying/laquering the rings for a better finish

Re: Shantybeater's S54 - BMWCar Mag+Xenon Retrofit finished!
Thanks for the comments guys
Ferdinand, i'm seriously considering it because of the amount of interest but I hope to run mine for a few months to make sure all checks out!
Jon, i rarely drive her hard enough to notice any major benefits but the backend definitely feels tighter. I'd give a try, like i say no bottoming out issues at all and i'm lowered a fair bit
Another headlight update, hopefully the last (i'm sure i'm boring everyone now! )
As suggested by Brian H I tried the chrome vinyl which didn't work on the rings so I masked and sprayed with titanium silver paint, the finish is much better. Instead I used the chrome vinyl behind the lens to hide the projector which I think works very well. Will be keeping an eye on things since i'm not sure how hot it gets in there or how heat resistant the vinyl is!!
Re: Shantybeater's S54 - BMWCar Mag+Xenon Retrofit finished!
Well another thing has been ticked off the list. After seeing a thread some time ago about how easy it was to retrofit cruise control to an S54 I finally got round to giving it a try. Popped into my local BMW dealership on thursday afternoon and ordered the same three parts outlined by other members:
B61.31.8.360.926 Switch
B61.31.1.390.968 Knob (English)
B65.71.8.380.054 Interface
I got a text this morning saying the parts had arrived:
Well an hour or so later its all fitted and working. I cannot believe how easy it was to fit, all the connections were already there, even the hole to cut out was outlined (a bit like airfix models). I've taken it for a test drive and everything looks in working order so very happy
fitted:

Did you get any pictures when fitting the cruise control interface? where is it located? I would like to try this on my car but need to check to see if the connectors are there before I order the parts.
Thanks
Brian

Hi Brian, I didn't take any I'm afraid but if you remove the plastic covers below the wheel ypu should see a bunch of cables tied together with a little white connection just sat there, it looks a similar shape and size as your average phone charger connection (the modern style)

Is this not just an upgrade for the S54? Or is it available to all facelifted Z's etc

This is an upgrade for the fly by wire models, so 2.2, 3.0 and S54. The kit i bought was for a US 2.5. However, you may need to do more to get it to work on the 2.2 and 3.0. You need to have a clutch switch (easy to check for), but the biggest issue will be if the car needs coding. Luckily the S54 doesn't, but the others may do.
Best do some searching. Bimmerfest or Bimmerforums in the US are good places to look.
Best of luck.

Re: Shantybeater's S54-BMWCar Mag+Xenon/Cruise Retrofit fini
Well i made the most of the jubilee bank holiday and got on with one of my big jobs i've been putting off for a while:
I broke my passenger seatbelt guide a while back now. After reading the 'how to' on bimmerforums (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh ... t=479280)I was quite hesitant to take on the task. I knew it was going to take some time and it did thats for sure! I never want to see another hog ring in my life
Whilst at it another thing on the list was a small lump inside the passenger seat, after stripping the lower part (another job i never wish to repeat) I found the heating element had moved or was fitted poorly from the factory. I've tried my best to reseat the heating element but it has warped after being in this position for 10~years
Finally it was time to fit my Whalen seat bushes I bought some time ago. Unlike my last zed i haven't noticed any rocking seat issues, just a slight squeak every time i get in the car.
The old bushes were actually in very good nick compared to other posters after the procedure
Extreme weight saving!
Whilst the seats were out it was a good opportunity to clean all those areas normally unreachable
Under the seats I found a blackberry case, heel of a shoe, nail file under the drivers seat and about £2.50 in change
