Pics of Z's with Angel Eyes

Post by shantybeater »

I'm still undecided on Angel Eyes so could do with some persuasion/input, I like the look of some but need to keep it as OEM as poss, there seems to be a silly amount of different shapes/sizes/colors etc.. Can anyone post pics with specs of their setup?

These look pretty good (random google search)

Image

There also seems to be orange/yellow versions out there which may look more in keeping with the z3 (e.g. E39 angels) but do they look too yellow/orange??

I've had mine for about six years now, initial cost was about £100

I had to replace one about six months ago, the set of 4 cost £30 on Ebay

From memory they are 6000K.

Pics of Z's with Angel Eyes

Post by g8jka »

Here you go shanty, had mine from eBay think they were 6000k/7000k. They are the closet to oem I could get at the time they were around £30. But you have to make sure you get specific Z3 ones as they are a different shape. They are fitted in front of the lenses, some do fit them behind though. I prefer them in front. Wired directly into the sidelights so they come on when they are switched on and are visible in daylight.

all the above look good, g8jka have you got any close ups of the headlamps both lights on and off?

Also are these the ones you mean? any preference?

These are the only z3 lower rated ones (6300k), i assume 8000k would be brighter and more blue? :

No havent really got any at the mo and this are the best I can find with the lights off

These were my old lights but the were exactly the same set up as I have now (minus the clear indicators)

The links you have above all look good, the ones from Ireland are the exact shape needed and there are not many sellers that show a picture of the actual angel eyes. Although I would be tempted with the 3rd ones as they are cheapest and from UK, if they are not the correct shape you can send them back as they are listed specifically for Z3 fitment so could be returned if not. Seems to be a few choices on ebay for them but I was always a bit wary if they didnt have a picture of the actual rings as they are a different shape. The place I had mine from no longer sell them but the ones in your 2nd or 3rd link look good. 8000k would be more blue like you say, oem is probably around 4000k but I have never seen them for a Z3 in this colour.

They look a very good fit, thanks for posting pics :)

I'll drop the seller of the bottom ones a message since they should be a bit closer to OEM colors

Yes the fit is great. although the chrome ring around the lenses have to be covered ever so slightly but they are a worthwhile mod :thumb:

I was thinking about stripping the chrome paint off the lenses and mounting them behind? do you think they will fit ok that way?

I dont think they are quite big enough to fit exactly behind where the chrome would be if you stripped it. You would have some overlap of lense/chrome part I think which may block or distort the light from the ring. You will be able to see better when you have the rings and put them against the lenses whether they are better behind or in front and some rings differ slightly in size which will depend again on whether they go in front or behind.

Mine fitted in front nicely but others who have brought them had to fit them behind the lense as they were slighlty smaller and wouldnt sit it front.

You will have to wait till you have them and then try all the different locations.

Would you show one pic without light up the angel eye? So that we can see the different of the angel eye in front of the glass and behind the glass.

Hi.

Anyone know what should be the exact diameter of the each ring?
I'm in pursuit of led ones - this is what I can choose:

-whole-circle 106 mm
-whole-circle 125 mm
-whole-circle 127,5 mm
-semi-circle 131,5 mm
-whole-circle 145 mm
-semi-circle 146 mm
-semi-circle 160 mm

They sell 106mm as the ones suitable for z3....

I have a set which go behind the inner lenses and a set that go infront of them, none of which work but I will measure the sizes for you tomorrow. Be nice to see which you go for and how they fit. I want a set again that fit infront of the lenses but I am struggling to find them anywhere now.

I tried using some El wire that can be threaded into the rings when the CCFL tubing is removed but they weren't bright enough and only visible at night.

Do you have any links to the ones you are looking at? I have also seen some led ones but I think they may need cutting down and hopefully this can be done with the led types.

From here - http://interlook.pl/product-pol-427-Ring-LED-SMD.html.
But... still question remains about the size... and shape... I'll probably take 106mm full circle and put them in front of the lens... I'll order them this week.

Couple of measurements here :)

Ones that fit infront of lenses

Image

Larger Ring (Left)

Outer diameter, left to right - 122 mm

Inner diameter, left to right - 107 mm

Outer diameter, top to bottom - 107 mm

Inner diameter, top to bottom - 95 mm

Smaller Ring (Right)

Outer diameter, left to right - 133 mm

Inner diameter, left to right - 118 mm

Outer diameter, top to bottom - 101 mm

Inner diameter, top to bottom - 92 mm

Ones that fit behind the lenses

Image

Larger Ring (Left)

Outer diameter, left to right - 131 mm

Inner diameter, left to right - 115 mm

Outer diameter, top to bottom - 115 mm

Inner diameter, top to bottom - 110 mm

Smaller Ring (Right)

Outer diameter, left to right - 133 mm

Inner diameter, left to right - 118 mm

Outer diameter, top to bottom - 101 mm

Inner diameter, top to bottom - 92 mm

The half circle ones seem to be the same size with both types yet the fuller circle ones are bigger for the ones that sit behind the lenses hence why they won't fit infront and some of the bottom of the headlight needs to be trimmed away with a dremmel.

Hope this helps some people :)

I just ordered 4x106mm full circle ones - Led. I'll give an update how it fits and how it looks like.
Total cost - £45. I'm worried that 106mm will be too small... and it will sit in front of the lens...

I detangoed and made some PS with the 106mm rings - will recieve them tommorow...
Idk what to think about it... Aren't they to small? I worry about the light beam at night. It will probably gonna be interferenced in a way. Wht do you guys think?
I usually drive z3 before sunset... ;)

Maybe put them behind the lenses...

They do look too small in this pic. Are you sure they should make full circle? I think there was always a gap somewhere...

Do they fit exactly like above?

I would make a couple of black metal shrouds to sit behind each lens, which blacks out from the edge of the chrome upto the inner edge of the angel eye. I don't know how or if this would affect the beam pattern of light output but it would look as if the lights have projectors in them, with the angel eyes fitted around them.

I know they have kits for the E36 with separates the light output between the standard light and the angel eye so that the rings can still be seen with the headlights on.

ok job done - took me 7 hours. Taking apart, mounting, testing drilling, cleaning, testing, mounting... finished in the middle of the night. But - it was worth it :). I tried behind and in front of the lens... behing more oem... but definetly it looks cleaner in front... and it is much easier to mount in front :) Hope you like it. It is clearly visible at day. Very bright. I have installed a led dimmer with remote so I can tur it off from the car, change brightness, etc etc :).
