Bad_Pritt's Zed

Post by Bad_Pritt »

Hi guys,

As I'm new on this forum, here's an extended introduction of me, but more importantly my car

My (real) name is Kris, I'm 35 (since thursday) and was born and raised in Belgium (around the area of Brussels). I currently own my second Z4 (E85 roadster 2.2i). Before that I had another Z4 (E85 roadster 2.5i) which I swapped for a 911 (996 model, 2002). I quickly swapped the 911 back for a Z4 after having loads of trouble with it. I chose a lighter engine on purpose as they seem more reliable and I'm using the car only in the weekend for sun & fun anyway.

I bought my car last summer and she now has about 95.000 kms.

Here are some specs when I bought it:
E85 roadster - Z4 2.2I - 170PK
Colour BLACK SAPPHIRE METALLIC (475)
Leather OREGON/BEIGE (LAAB)
Black soft top
Options: rims 108-style with RFT's (never again!), wood trim, heated seats, PDC, automatic airco, business radio-CD, white indicators, aero side skirts, aero rear bumper lip, stainless steel tips

She looked like this when I bought her end of june 2012:

Since then, I changed quite a bit:
- K&N airfilter (in the original filter box)
- wooden interior parts replaced by brushed metal (the wood made my eyes bleed)
- Quad exhaust conversion
- remap (15hp extra and much better throttle response)
- Blacked out third brake light
- Blacked out side indicators
- symmetrical tail lights
- Stubby
- comfort light module (fogs running as DRL's, 3-times indicator on touch, angels on/off on locking/unlocing the car)
- Gaptech roof module
- Angel eyes (cut and shut)
- Homemade airscoop
- red painted calipers
- aluminium short shift gear knob
- aluminium handbrake handle
- aluminium radio knob
- fog bulbs replaced with leds
- extra white HiD bulbs for headlights
- black hey holes
- full tail lights lighting up on breaking
- de-french fried
- cruise control retrofit

So today she looks like this:

Exterior:

Interior:

Mods coming up:
- 3cm drop
- multi-functional steering wheel
- hardwired GPS in OEM housing (flip-screen)
- Aluminium pedals
- Aluminium door pins
- 19" rims with regular tyres
- New front bumper (M-type front and rear with facelift tail lights, or Aero front only, not sure yet)
- replace interior lights and license plate lights with leds
- footwell lights retrofit (with leds)
- mid muffler delete
- clutch delay valve (cdv) delete
- replace catalytic converters by sportcats for better flow (and sound)
- etc...

too many negative responses from the M-police
but it's understandable I guess as it stands for something. For me it stood for the fact that my car is personalised and not just a standard Zed. Anyway, I am brainstorming with someone from the UK on another forum to develop a sort of logo for Z4's that have been personalised, som something in between the standard Zeds and the M's...

Your car looks very nice and has enough sporty and subtle modifications to get admiring glances and raise curiosity. I don’t think that needs the M badge. I had a long test drive in a black 54 reg Alpina Roadster S just over a year ago and I think yours looks better.

On the bottom right you can see the bolt that tightens the steering wheel which I almost forgot to put back on

Lovely car! The new steering wheel is mint. Was it hard removing/attaching the old and new one?

It was actually real simple, 5 minute job. There are 2 little holes on each side of the steering wheel holder. With a fine screwdriver pushed in on each side, the airbag comes right of. Disconnect 2 cables, unbolt the steering wheel and take off the wheel. You can't really miss when putting the new wheel on as there is a little groove in the center, so it only fits 1 way. And then put the bolt back on tight, click the cables back into the airbag en click the airbag back on the steering wheel. Really as simple as that... All Z4's made after 09/2003 already have the cables pre-wired for the buttons on the steering wheel, so no electronics to worry about.

What did you do with the "old" steering wheel? I've adapted one just like it and fitted it into my Z3...complete with single stage airbag. (The Z4 has a dual stage as standard).

I have some wheels I can buy really cheap, M3 reps.

They are 19 inch, 9J with 245/35 Y93, tyres are still good.
They came of an E60 and I don't know the ET value of the rims...

Is it worth looking further into or will I have trouble for the front?

In the meantime ordere a few new small bits for the interior. Can't mount the CSL's right aways as the rear tyres are crap tyres, so waiting to get better ones. center caps aren't good either en missing the small M-logo's... but all ordered to be sorted. :-)

Anyway, installed a small bottle holder for try-out and mounted it today:
(I didn't fix it yet, just slipped under the plastic parts)

Also mounted the AC Schnitzer pedals I ordered (reps):

Looks much fresher now!

So, ordered a few more bits recently such as new leds for the fog lights (brighter ones), door pins with BMW-logo and new wheels... So far, things are not going the way I wanted it  The leds I received only have 27 smd though I ordered 68 smd types, so sent a mail to the seller. The door pins seemed pretty straight-forward to fit but I was able to mess up anyway... I pushed in the new door pin on one side, it didn't go in deep enough. So figured I'd take it back off again to trim down the rubber inside the door pin, do get a better fit. When pulling of the door pin, the part you push it onto was suddenly gone... Looking at some info on this forum, it seems to be a long bar coming up from half-way the door... so will have to take the door panels of to get a better fit... Might use the opportunity to put some roofing in the doors to get rid of the tinny door sound. Doors still open and close luckily. The weels are fine, but they have the wrong tyres on the rears. The guy I bought them from, put 225/35/19 on all 4 wheels. In the front it's a perfect fit, but at the back it just looks wrong with the wheels rings sticking out way too far... After a closer look, the wheel caps all seem to be different, so ordered a set of those as well. The little M's were missing too, so ordered that as well, which I just mounted, but still waiting for the wheel caps to arrive... Monday I'm getting new tyres for the rear: Marangoni Mythos, which seems to be OK according to some forum members. All 4 wheels will be balanced and I'll mount them on the car, hoping the wheels caps will arrive soon...

After putting on a small lincense plate I also changed the led fogs (still had these laying around). The leds I had were pretty poor in light quality, so I've put in some brigther ones:

Image

Still have these laying around too:

Image

So I have 2 sets of fog leds for grabs should anyone make me a good offer, I paid 20£ for each set (+postage). Both sets are still brand new (the ones I had before ran just a few 100 miles). PM me if interested (no idea on postage cost though).
