Ardarroch to Applecross

Post by spokey »

Submitted by: roadmonster

How I found it: TBA

Useful tips: this is part of the Wester Ross coastal route and is fabulous beyond belief, the scale of the scenery is to die for, and for someone like me who doesn't do "up" it's a terror as well as a delight.

Where it is: This is on the Scottish coast

Estimated distance: 11 miles

do it in the summer , it does not get griited during the winter.
also rear the huge warning sign at the Ardaroch end telling you the road is not suitable for HGV's caravans etc

This road is a "scenic" route ONLY, but is a MUST if you are anywhere near. It is single track with lots of passing places and you won't be going fast on any of it!!!!!!

I don't know if I'm just on a downer lately, but I really didn't think it was worth the effort. :(

However, Applecross itself is well worth a visit, and the coastal road more than made up for my disappointment over the pass. It's an endless hustle of technical twisty driving that had me whooping with delight on several occasions!

I'd suggest it's better doing an anti-clockwise round trip - and approaching it for the first time going west to east.

Carry on north at Tornapress and go up as far as Shieldaig, then left along the coast road to Applecross.

Then take the road up to the pass, which is quite deceiving - a gentle slope up to the summit. At that point the views are breathtaking in all directions, and the pass looks more impressive from the top than from the bottom. And you can always come back up if you prefer an uphill blast.

Did this route with some Morgan friends 4 years ago (anti-clockwise that is).
I'd do it again any day :)

It is a terrific road in the same league as Hardknott and Wrynose Passes in the Lakes. I first drove The Pass of the Cattle to Applecross in 1971 in a Hillman Hunter. If you're there you simply must do it. An RAF air sea rescue helicopter made a low pass overhead when I was up there in 1973 in my MG Midget. VERY distracting!

Drove it road using anti- clockwise route in June as part of our tour of Scotland.
Terrific view from the top. It is part of the NC500 so tends to get a bit busy but is still worth making a detour for if you are anywhere near.
