A885/A815/A83 Dunoon to Tarbet

How I found it: Found it by pure chance, I took the ferry from Gourock to Dunoon just for fun and then decided to drive back to Glasgow rather than take the ferry back.

Useful tips: The road is magnificent, unfortunately I don't have any pics that are truly representative but it's one of the best routes I've driven in Scotland (includes highlands and islands).

Good road surfaces, great scenery (very pretty lakes, the road is literally on the coastline, and then through a steep and deep valley) but beware the occasional imprezas (you can hear them from a mile away though)!

Where it is: Northwest of Glasgow.

Estimated distance: 41 miles

do you actually like driving at all or are cars to you just a manifestation of some sort of pathological mother complex ?

nice bit of road but I once went over it and had to take a major detour to get to Dunoon because of serious accident on the the road , Two fire engines and lots of police . other than that a fantastically scenic route though.

have not done it in a while....must try harder

I love that road. Some lovely places to stop off at too.

That whole area is great. As soon as you're over the Erskine bridge and onto the Loch Lomond roads, the scenery and driving experience is indescribable.

Off topic, but I'm just back from Rock Ness up in Inverness. The drive was fantastic, with the weather good enough to have the top down. It makes all those winter months with the hood up seem like a distant memory :)

I live 25 miles outside of Dunoon. You take the A885 out 4 mile down the road turn left on the B836 then right when you reach A886 then left onto the A8003 and head for Tighnabruaich. On that road there is one of the finest views in the whole of Scotland. If you want to do a full circuit, head for the Tarbert Ferry {not Tarbet}from Tarbert turn right and head for lochgilphead, Inveraray on the A83.Then head for Arrochar over The rest and be Thankfull.Once through Arrochar Watch Just befor Tarbet the Police wait in a bus stop for speeding drivers.
If you want a really challenging drive Follow the route from Dunoon But don,t turn left on the A8003 for Tighnabruaich take the next left the C11
for Otterferry [No ferry] Turn right and follow the loch untill you get to the A886 Happy driving

The Rest and be Thankful.
The old road is in the foreground with the new road up to the left.
