Ash,

Good on yer mate.

Nice to see that the taste you have in getting a Zed also extended to your choice of computers.

Personally use an iMac, a PowerMac, and a MacBook Pro. Love the Air but cannot justiofy it when there is so much I want to do to my ///M (aka Boomer)

BTW my car has pics in the Gallery if you are interested.

Thanks Ash. I must say that I do look for excuses to drive somewhere, anywhere. It is just so much fun to be in and even though the ICE is good I often just prefer to listen to the music of that engine.

See you around sometime.

I'm a PC man myself. I work for an advertising agency and all the creative guys use Macs but I find them temperamental. If they were a person they would be Kate Moss. All the looks but can fly off the rails now and then!

Spellcheck on the Mac is built in to the system, but you have the choice of turning it off if you wish - or ignoring it. Macs give you free will, unlike PCs which seems to dictate to their users

I have both now, so can not be discriminated against :D

Mac has a number of great features, but I still miss the right click / properties bit on the Mac.

Not found out yet why the Safari browser window is so small either ...

quite some time since I had a Mac & we used to run our office systems under Unix but sadly now we've 'standardised' with PCs, Windows Server, & Windows. But for publishing & graphics there's nothing to beat a Mac.

cmd and click will give you "right" click

The safari window only expands to the size it needs to be to display the full page width. You can drag the window from the bottom right corner to make it as big as you like

Safari will also remember how large the window was the last time it was open, when it reopens later on... that can be a little annoying at times!

Actually its "ctrl" click or just use a 2-button mouse

If you have a 2-button mouse and you can't get right click to work, go into System Preferences and in the Keyboard and Mouse panel make sure right click is enabled for the mouse you are using.

If you're using a modern Mac laptop with a trackpad, you can get right click on the track pad by placing 2 fingers on it when you click the button (has to be enabled in the trackpad System Preferences panel). You can also use 2 fingers to scroll windows in any direction...

Does that work in the following situation: I want to paste the URL from a picture I have posted somewhere. Normally, I would right click the picture, get properties and copy the url.

On the Mac, I could not find a way to do that, so would the above work for that?

When you 'Right click' you should get some or all of the following options:

<img src="http://bmwz.woodford.ch/misc/Screen/200 ... tClick.jpg" alt="" width="" height="" border="0" />

:) :)

p.s. This is not the Le Mans 2008 winning No.2 Audi (Dindo, TK and Wee Alan McNish)

I left the PC scene six years ago and have never looked back. I have switched all my colleges over to macs (all ten) and they have had no bother at all. This makes my life a whole lot easier not have to fix there PC every two minutes. Yes they are more money. Apple build the hardware and operating system so there is less chance of compatibility issues.

Well on a Mac, try using adium http://adium.im/ or using aMSN http://www.amsn-project.net/

Adium - looks much better then MSN messenger but has no video chat

aMSN - looks pretty naff, but has skins to make tart it up a bit, but does support video chat..

Hope it helps

There are workarounds but video can be quite demanding. Here is another approach.

For standard chat the best solution is the built in iChat application. It supports Jabber so you can use Yahooo, MSN, Google Talk, AIM and Apple's own chat network - iTools/.mac/MobileMe - without any additional software. All you need to do is, Google a step by step guide; there are plenty.

For reliable video chat the best option is to use Skype or iChat with a MobileMe account or a free AIM account. If you have a decent specification Mac the video quality is very good. For top quality video plug-in a firewire video camera.

I use Dii(F) at work, running some incarnation of windows but this also uses Oracle - not very user friendly, but when I get home to barracks Mac OS X... silky smooth on a Mac Pro. Defiantly the way ahead. Think different.

Mac packaging is lovely.

The machine inside is an overpriced over engineered waste of everyone's time.

Get a PC, learn how to use it properly and pocket the $$$$$$$$$$$$$ and go down the pub safe in the knowledge you wont have to talk about how great your mac is because thats what most people who have one seem to do :D

smartypants I take on board your comments on learning to use your PC. However, in six years I have not had a single issue with my mac. Unlike my PC before! Yes I could use it properly but there was always the self destructive nature of Windows. Then the constant battle with virus/updates mail-ware, browsers been corrupted by third party software being piggy backed in. Not to mention hardware failure.

So yes I will bang on about how good they are because I have had both so I can justify my comments.

Have you ever owned a mac? If so how long ago?

Hey D-reame..

I'm a software programmer working on a PC with predominantly Microsoft software for development, however our software is aimed at the print industry which is very Mac heavy, so I do a lot of support and testing on them, although don't run one day today. They are nice enough machines, but they are certainly no match for a PC. And when they go wrong they go very wrong, and ultimately very costly to fix.

PCs are only as good as their owners, through use and what components they specced... I suppose thats the Macs advantage - every one will be the same. I wont champion the PC, but I will defend it saying its the fault of the person using it (bad workman etc...), its a machine you have to keep it serviced and look after it - you wouldnt just run your Z3/Z4 without any servicing would you?

And as for viruses, again that the fault of the owner. Never had one in 15+ years of PC ownership... and i dont run any antivirus software. I am just careful what I open that I dont know about :)

Hi again. Put like that I would agree with you totally. For those with in depth knowledge you could easily argue both sides. I think the point I was trying to make was, if you don't want to get deeply involved, most find the point and shoot concept of a mac easier to live with. They require less looking after. But if like your self you have the know how then the cost and choice of a PC will suit your needs better.

Fully agree to be honest, I just find it a bit silly when people slag off the PC when they obviously don't really know what they are talking about or how to use it properly :)

I've considered getting a Mac for a home media centre, mainly because it looks nicer - and just a bit different.. but for no real other advantage as the PC would outperform it if I spend the same money on it.

Windows 7 is good. I have it.

The new iPhone is a dissapointment. Introducing more ways to fleece you for cash for a bluetooth modem and TomTom (can bet that won't be cheap), plus a still huge (~£800) offline price (N97 32GB ~£475), no OLED display as rumoured, standby time that is still below the N97 competition and erm, a compass.

Meguiars PlastX although designed for clear plastics, the very fine micro polish does an excellent job on mobile phones etc.

I've just ordered the 32GB version, mostly because I need a new iPod. As good as the iPhone is; particularly for web apps, I won't be giving up the Blackberry just yet.

My colleague is running the beta (i am not brave enough!) - on a Pentium 4 (single core processor) with 1Gb memory... runs absolutely fine.

Huge disappointment with the iPhone again... they rave about MMS messaging and a 3Mb pixel camera which I had on my horrid Sony Ericsson 5 years ago.

I'll probably be buying the new Nokia 6700... have the N95 8gb now, which is a fantastic phone, hugely superiour to the iPhone, but a bit on the cumbersome side... want to go back to a slimline. Was hoping the iphone would catch Nokia up, but seems its still 5-6 years behind the curve.

Oh well, I'll leave it to be snapped up by 14 year old girls and art students :D

Me too. It will cost me £245 to buy out of my contract. Then £186 for a new 16GB on £35 tarrif. That is £431 and committing to a new 18 month contract with a new number which I do not want!

I have decided to sell my current 8GB 3G hoping to get around £270 (I have sold them in the past for £300 no problem). Then buy the new 16GB for £440. So come January I will be in a position to take the new iphone for free on a new contract selling my current 16GB 3GS for around £360.

This will give me back my £170 with a little beer money.

Or I could just wait but then my current iphone 8GB will be worth very little.

I also ran with Nokia for years and loved them. I have been with the iPhone since the launch. The old 2G iPhone was not up to much. The iPhone 3G is very good at what it is best at which is internet, email and a phone. Its down fall for me has always been the lack of MMS, contact sending via SMS, Group ringtone assignment, custom SMS tones, bluetooth profiles, tethering, video recording and voice turn by turn software. My list could go on and on.

The new 3.0 firmware should put it where it should have been the first time. Yes the camera is only 3 meg but the quality of images from my current 2 meg have always been pretty good. So for me this is not a problem. No doubt there will be omissions but it is nearly there.

The thing that swings it for me is the ease of use. It works like a charm. I had nothing but issues with the N95 when that came out. The N96 has suffered the same issues. All sorted now but then is this not what Apple have done over time?

At the end of the day its what suits your needs. I need more GB's and video recording would be handy for the family moments.

P.S. I am not a 14 year old girl or art student. LOL :D

I've not had "issues" with the N95, but I do find it hard to use at times, and slow... compared to every other Nokia I've owned. But it is a mini-PDA rather than a phone. I do actually like the use of the iPhone, its slick quick and quite easy. Just its lacking in features and is overpriced. I dont own an iPod though, and if I did want or need one I would buy an iPhone

I personally use a PC (Windows 7 at the mo). I am a web designer and .Net programmer (hence Windows for the .Net development)

I don't get to use a Mac often but don't find them any better or worse than a PC. As long as I can get photoshop etc and get my work done it really doesn't matter to me :)

In terms of hardware they are just a PC now anyway, but the OS is pretty good, I see the advantages of both :)

-

The original N95 is rubbish compared to the N95 8GB, best thing they did was double the Ram in the 8GB version. Some people think they just added the 8GB storage to it. No issues with the N95 8GB.

iPhone is really good for browsing the net, and I agree the camera isn't that important. If I need decent quality I use my DSLR instead.

Both iPhone and N95 cameras are perfect for "snaps" when out with friends and stuff like that, and pics from both look great on screen and half decent when printed.
