Whitby Restaurant

Post by Guest »

Went up to whitby couple of weeks ago which is a nice relaxing place to go and if you like fish you can't go wrong (being a fishing port and all). Set off one night to go to a restaurant found in a guide book but wasn't impressed with menu so left and made our way back to Whitby. Ended up calling in the www.cross-butts.co.uk, which we had actually driven past already.

The place was great, there were only 2 of us but you get to sit at tables that would comfortably seat 6/8 and they are set out around a large room that is split mostly into "sections" divided by "stable dividers". The full name of the place is Cross Butts Stable Restaurant so stables is the theme. The menu is varied and they have specials menu also that changes every couple of days to use fresh local produce. The staff there are very attentive and very much give the impression that they really want you to enjoy your visit to them. We couldn't fault the food and service, suffice to say we returned again on our last night and enjoyed another enjoyable night. They do a carvery which we didn't have so cannot really comment and they also do rooms which seemed really popular.

2nd recommendation in Whitby - Bothams Tea Rooms but the one on Skinner Street, not the one right in the centre.

Sampled afternoon teas here a couple of times after long walks and we couldn't fault them. The food is very high quality and is matched by the staff who are by far the most attentive staff I have ever come across. www.botham.co.uk - we brought back some cakes and bread from their newly opened factory shop which is ideally placed on the main road just out of the town centre so we had the lovelly smell of fresh bread in the car all the way home - was highly tempted to break bits off as we went but we didn't.

3rd recommendation in Whitby - Long King Chinese restaurant West Cliff - usually find a chinese whilst on holiday and they are usually ok - nothing special, but Long King was that little bit better than most. Again the staff were really attentive and the food was exceptional. One thing they did do which I have never seen before is try to persuade everyone to use chopsticks. We were entertained by the staff trying to teach 4 ladies (who had clearly had a glass or 2 of wine) and who had never used them before, to add to that 1 lady was left handed which the staff simply could not get their heads around. I thought it was a nice touch to encourage diners to enjoy the full chinese experience.

Woudl highly recommend all of these restaurants if you are ever in the Whitby area and hope your experience is as pleasant as ours was.
