Thumbs up to the Fintry Inn, north east of Glasgow over the "Campsies" - best burger I've tasted in a long time.

Thumbs down to the Cross Keys at Kippen, a bit further than Fintry - now gone "gastro pub", on the menu is a Scotch Pie, done over with something - £6-odd. Yes, six quid for a mutton pie.

Thumbs up to the Horseshoe Bar in Glasgow who still do the best pie and peas.

Thumbs down to the Onich Hotel, south of Fort William for putting garlic in a burger. Likewise to the Jolly Abbot in Newton Abbot, Devon for doing likewise. I mean who in their right mind puts garlic in a burger!

And yes I am a man of simple culinary taste..

Thumbs up and down on this year's trip up north.

Lochawe - The Tight Line pub. Thumbs down for some appalling food, including the worst chips I've tasted in a long time. And a landlord with the social skills of Basil Fawlty.

Lochaiilort - The Lochaillort Inn: brilliant food. Haddock that I had to go back two days running for. Superb.
