Mats

Post by TJS »

Are Z1 OEM overmats a bespoke item or would E30 3 series LHD mats also fit ?

A supplier is happy to make up a set If I can provide a pattern which isnt a problem.

I may be wrong, but im sure E30 dont fit, as the footwell is a different shape and size.

I hope your tailor is exceptionally good. Having experimented with a few after market mats, they always turn out the same, screwed up under the pedals, worn out in the heel area and a nightmare to keep clean = waste of money.

At close to £90 the OEM is the best option, the material is durable, lasts much longer and does not bend easily under stress. But as you probably know, they dont make them anymore.

Long answer to short question :nerd:

Thanks Jet

Since posting the original question I have ordered a set from www.autostyle.co.uk for £65. I spoke to the company and they confirmed the shape is an exact match with high quality material. They have sold a number of sets in both UK and Germany.

The original mats are in very good condition, almost too good to use in the current weather.

Impressive site. This is the way to go if you have an original set of mats, buy a disposable pair.
I couldnt help but notice there is no mention of the material used :( is it a exact copy of the original using the same process and materials?
Im being a little cynical, as I have a set of "quality mats" in the car, that looked nice originally, but are useless. When it gets wet, the water floats on the top layer, rather than seep into the "cups" built into the original items.
Once you have had an opportunity to compare the two items, I would be interested to hear your views.

To reduce the buckling effect under the pedals, I had to buy a piece of heavy duty carpet, cut to size and glue it to the underside of the mats, making it very heavy and less likely to move under pressure.

Let us know how you get on with them, because I need a set.

Of course, no problem, as soon as they arrive I will post comparative pictures with the oem mats plus a description of the materials.

The original mats are still available. Two colours, dark grey and dark green. part nos. 82119413232 and 3 respectively. Grey mats are £99.50 (inc vat) green £91.60 (plus vat). No stock in the UK, however, Germany have 5 sets of the grey mats and 3 green. UK dealer delivery is 5 days, cash up front. Surprise surprise thay are not a sufficiently big seller for the dealer to hold in stock.

The mats I have ordered from autostyle are anthracite with silver binding (seats/trim is light grey) plus a heel pad on the drivers mat.

Pictures (hopefully) of the autostyle mats compared to BMW OEM.

The colour, anthracite, is a perfect match to the original dark grey. The pile is not quite so dense and long. The rear of the OEM mats is a comparatively smooth rubberised finish compared to the rougher autostlye mats, however, the latter will grip the carpet better. If OEM mats rank as 10 the autostyle mats rank as 7 for materials. The bindings are better than the originals albeit the fixings are best described as adequate. If the original mats are trashed it would not be difficult to recycle the BMW fittings.

The optional heel pad is very well placed and the drivers mat is much better detailed towards the bulkhead unlike the passenger side. They fit well in the car.

I will place them over the original mats. Overall ... they are 40% cheaper than BMW original kit plus you can specify different colours and contrasting bindings which may be of interest for those with red cars.
