Missing plastic trim!

Post by Green Genie »

Plastic trim on back bumper by defuser missing or not? Part 24 & 23

Hi guys been looking back over some old posts and came across this link http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=51&fg=15 I thought mine was missing cos seen this part on another car. Is this as easy to fit as it looks or does the bumper ping apart when you remove the plastic screws? Was this fitted to latter cars only? seems to finish it off nicely.
Thanks.

That cover is easy to retrofit for 1989 Z1s.

I'm having a hard time picturing what this looks like on the car. Anyone have any pictures of it installed?

The very early cars (essentially pre-production) did not have that cover, it is not a matter of your cars missing a trim, but rather that they were not produced with it.

Also the very late cars had different rear suspension components (steel cf aluminium, and different calipers)

Well Senna, My Zetti is a trifle upset at being referred to as Pre-production. It's build number is ALO 1555 a UK supplied car. Built late 1989, first registered 1st January 1990.
I really don't think you would call this pre-production and it certainly was not fitted with the rear cover strip ex factory.

i.e 78 cars have a different chassis number ("early production/pre-production") I was informed that these vehicles are missing the plastic trim.
As they are quite special I would not put it on. (cf early Morris Minors with a 4 inch metal spacer to widen the bumper)

Sorry if I hurt your Zettis feelings.

My car was an early car and it did not come fitted to mine, however the part is cheap and looks much better fitted onto the car! Looks like it should! I can always take it off if i wanted!! LOL..

Hi Senna

My German is also not that good but have been pondering on this for a while and sent it to a German colleague who has translated it for me word for word as you would expect. See translation below:

"78 vehicles of the produced 8000 ZI cars did not have" the usual body number ALOxxx but E30. This body nr. had a sequence of 2074501 to 207590 (90 cars). The following numbers were missing 2074548 etc. etc. (12 vehicles). These Zettis are pre-series vehicles acc. to BMW. Not more than 8000 Zettis were produced as pre-series vehicles either. i.e. the Z1 body number AL07920 to incl. AL07998 (79 vehicles) do not exist. Reading this, you may have noticed there is 1 Z1 missing. I am not able to explain why."

My Zettie is a UK supplied car built late 89 and registered 1 Jan 1990 exactly the same as Pat Slades build etc and a similar ALO number.

How can these be classed as early/pre-production? I presume you have got this German text from the Z1 Chronicle? Also very interesting to note that there is one Z1 missing which your source is unable to explain...

Hope the translation helps to throw some light on the matter.... :)
