The BMW Vintage and Classic Car Club of America is in the midst of our 2 week Rally around northern California. We have 7 Z1's participating (considered "Classic" ) . I opted for a 1937 BMW 327/8 this time but no one can beat the Z1 for fun in the California sun! I think 5 of the Z1's hail from Germany but there is one with UK plates. Great pictures, Rick! What a fabulous collection of vintage and classic hardware, too...
I'd expect those kind of temps in SoCal or Arizona/Nevada, so where exactly in northern Cali did the thermometer hit 106F? I bet that was a test for the old machinery to cope with those temps (nevermind the drivers...very few of which likely had AC!!!)

The yellow one and one of the reds looks like it could be a UK private front plate (although the red one--Z1 BMW-- is highly unlikely!)Pat Slade wrote:Great pictures Rick. Many thanks. Couldn't spot the UK plated car - am I going blind?

I love the 327 from 1937, trade my z1 for it?Rick Meinig wrote:... I opted for a 1937 BMW 327/8 this time but no one can beat the Z1 for fun in the California sun! [...]

Z1's in USA
Beautiful photos!
Thanks!
My Z1 was found and bought in CA.... but its too long a drive to come back and do something like that...though it looks like a blast!

Redding California was the hotspot! It was a big relief to get up to Lassen National Park the following day where the morning temperatures were in the low 50's F. I'm back in Colorado at work but the Marathon finishes this weekend! Goetz Pfafflin has succeeded in organizing yet another brilliant driving venue: the East Coast in 04, Colorado in 05, Michigan in 06 and now California in 08. The Z1's from europe have been an integral part of these drives. We now have a couple of US Z1's to carry the banner as well!
May I suggest an Arizona and New Mexico route in 2010? I am hoping to have another Z1 in the US by then and would be happy to help Goetz organize the next marathon!
