Groaning from the steering?

Post by spokey »

Occasionally (and I can never predict when or where it will happen) I get a groaning noise from the steering, it seems to only happen when turning the wheel a lot, such as when parking. But it doesn't happen every time.

Any ideas? :?

do you actually like driving at all or are cars to you just a manifestation of some sort of pathological mother complex ?

Mine does exactly that, but I was too embarrassed to mention it.

Sound's like your PAS pump... mine was leaking fluid from the pressure hoses which I had replaced but was'nt noisy. Are you loosing PAS fluid?
Mine was dripping into the plastic undertray and eventually onto my drive and garage floor. Also is your PAS belt loose or in need of renewal as these can squeel/groan.

Have you been taking corners/bends a bit quick

Let us know how you get on.

Hi,

Are you sure it's not when you reach the steering rack end stop on both ends ? If so, it's normal.

Mine groans on full lock, so it's normal, I hope.

if it is at full lock it is the by pass that releases power steering fluid back in to the reservoir.

just turn the wheel slightly back to prevent this from happening, its not bad that is occurs, just better to prevent overloading of the power system

Mine does it too!
It is not at full lock (that is more of a 'hissing' noise, like treading on a hose pipe). It only comes occasionally but is always at standstill when parking or turning round. My car has such low mileage that I would be very surprised if it were the PAS pump, as these go on for ever and when they do get noisy it is a permanent whirring noise even when the wheel is not being turned.
I think it is a momentary belt slip that causes the noise. On other cars this sometimes manifests itself as a shrieking, but on the Z1 it is more of a groan.
My belt is about the right tension and I don't want to overtighten it as that will put more strain on the system than is necessary so I just make do with the occasonal groan. These cars are human after all you know.

Does it happen when you're turning the wheel quickly and the engine speed is low? You might be "beating" the pump's delivery rate.

Felix,
I suppose it does, yes. Not sure about the delivery rate of the pump though. I think that it is more the violent movement is too much for the assistance and the belt slips. It is no real worry to me though......

Add mine to the list. It only happens when parking and twirling the wheel from lock to lock.

It pretty loud and sounds like the Soup Dragon from The Clangers, which wont mean much to the younger generation or those overseas !!

I did remove the bulkhead gaiter and sprayed lubricant along the steering shaft in addition to the bearing holder under the dash. It made no difference
