New BMW Colour Choice for the Z1

Post by benslick »

My BMW Z1 was crashed and will be fitted with a new front bumper, bonnot and wing and it needs to be totally re sprayed, so all the body panels match perfectly. All the panels will be removed, however, there is the small problem of colour choice. I was just going to have it re sprayed in original red, but after some discussion a new BMW colour will be used.

I am aware most would stick to original colours but what new BMW colour would you choose for a BMW Z1?

Le Mans Blue, if it was me. It's a lovely colour. I only didn't pick it for my 135i because approximately half of all MSport 1-series are Le Mans Blue and with the 135i only you can get a wider palette, so I went for Monaco Blue.

Monaco Blue is very nice though - very dark but has a brilliant blue shimmer in sunlight:

Out of the new colour schemes, I'd go for Midnight Blue, which I think may come under the "Blue Black" vote.

Didn't know BMW did a "Blue Black" shade but if it's anything like the colour of my Mercedes, which Mercedes officially calls "Blue Black", then it's a rather uninteresting (if admittedly smart) metallic dark charcoal grey colour that I've never been able to detect any hint of blue in!

Examples of the "Blue Black"/Midnight Blue colour scheme:

Out of all the current schemes, it's top of the list for me. I would say Phoenix Yellow as that's a favorite of mine too but I just can't picture it on a Z1. :fade

Seems pretty similar to the Monaco Blue on my 135i!

Hi Ben,

you have forgotten the nice "piggy pink" :bawl: :bawl: :bawl:

No, serious now...

Have you ever seen "mauritius blue"??? It was used for a very special E31 850i with a high glossy black roof...
That colour looks very nice at fittet very good to the black parts of that car and the E31 is the big brother of the Z1, so it meight be a nice colour and nobody else has a Z1 in that colour.

I will try to get a pic of the car and send it to you.

Montreal blue....why not.
You got two different shades of blue with that color.
It's midnight blue in the sun and slightly purple when it's cloudy. The best of the two world with the same color :D 8-)

Excellent choice, Michael! I once owned an E36 325iC in Mauritius Blue with a blue top (aka hood in UK-speak). I think it is the nicest blue that BMW ever used--darker than montreal blue, lighter than monaco blue...a beautiful color. Mauritius would definitely be my choice if I were going to change the color of my Z...Interlagos would be my second....

Looking forward to your choice, Ben, and the ensuing pics!

Hi Ben,

there are quite a few nice blue paints available.

You've got to make a basic decision: Do you want a showy colour or an inconspicuous one ?

Purblau and mauritius-blue are rather showy, and midnightblue is not.

Coming from toprot, you'll have a totally different car, anyway.

If you take off all plastic parts, you may consider mounting the reinforcements from Michael Kabbert on the front fenders and the side skirts.

Have fun

I know it's not on your options list, but have you thought about Laguna Seca Blue? I personally think it'sll suit the Z1 no end.

Might be worth asking some handy to photoshop all the colours you mention

There was a Z1 floating around in what looked a lot like LSB. I for one thought Smurf Blue didn't suit the Z1 at all...

I would look for a colour that fits the interior: Camouflage, so a green tint should be in it, there are a few black Individual Colours with a green tint in it.

Melbourne is metallic, Imola not. I think Imola 2 is a bit darker more Ferrari red :D

But why choose another red and not go for the original red, the difference would be to small for me to sacrifice the originality :?:

OK Ben if you really want something else go for a different colour like Kyalami Orange or Phoenix Yellow and not a colour wich looks a lot like the original one.
When you want a BMW colour you should shop for ///M colours or Individual Colours. Diopside Black would look great with the Camouflage interior.

Don't go for the original color Ben! Do something out of the ordinairy. Imola red is to close to de Topred of your Zed. Pick Melbourne red or Vermillionred or even better pick a total different color. Estoril blue or maybe Phoenix yellow. Azurit black metallic or Ruby black metallic which are brilliant BMW Individual colors. But my advise would be this http://www.bmw.nl/nl/nl/newvehicles/mse ... paper.html as far as it comes to the color

No Ben, I think it would better suit a RR. IMO a very classic colour the darker red. When I saw it the only thing I could think of was: sedan, old, stiff: bowler hat :D

But Ben don't mind me, follow the advise in the song: you should go your own way...... :D

If Vermillion is generally to your liking, but may be a little "too brown", have you considered going outside the BMW color wheel? You might head out to your local Porsche, Jaguar, Merc stealer to see some colors in the flesh. There's no substitute for seeing the actual color on an actual car under natural light. Any paint shop can mix just about any color, especially if you have the OEM paint code.

Sounds like you are leaning heavily toward a shade of red, so I highly recommend a 1990's Jaguar color called Flamenco Mica Pearl Metallic. I had a 6-series coupe repainted in that color some years ago. With a reddish-brown primer coat underneath, it really popped! If I had a nickel (5p) for every compliment I received on that color, I'd be retired and living off the royalties!

Imola Red It Is Then...

Post by benslick »

Hey guys,

Colour choice update!

I always liked top red apart from two points, the first being the fact that it goes a little Orange in the sun and second point that when I started meeting other Z1 drivers most of them happened to drive top red Z1's making me suddenly feel a little common as most Z1's happen to be top red! LOL!!

Anyway I love red and don't want to change to a darker colour. I have looked at many photos online of various red BMW shades and I am going to choose the winning colour on the poll (Imola red) as Melbourne red is harder to spray well and also goes a little Orange in the sun..

Also, no other Z1 is painted in Imola red at present to my knoledge!
