To be honest, none of those really floats my boat. If those were the only options on the table, then I'd probably go for Wales.

do you actually like driving at all or are cars to you just a manifestation of some sort of pathological mother complex ?

My thought is to keep it in the UK and fairly central so as to make it accessible to the largest number possible. For those interested in a continental tour I would suggest linking up to one of the existing tours in France, Holland, Germany or Switzerland. If we take the UK tour abroad I would guess we'll lose 50% or more of those who are up for a UK tour. Last year's recipe worked very well - let's try it again.

Well here is my respons guys. It's no problem to arrange something in Holland because I already promised the "Nordlichter"(German Z1 guys from Hamburg) to do a Tour in Holland. You can just join in! If you want a Tour for the Brits let's first ask how many guys will really come. But it would be nice to see you on the mainland with you Zeds offcourse.
HH
HH
I agree wholly with Felix, in that the siting of the focal point of the UK tour 2010, must be central and accessible for everybody. A UK tour could easily be condensed into 2 days, but linking to a continental tour would virtually demand a minimum of 3/4 days. This is time that forum members with young families may struggle to justify.
As HH has stated, we could always join in at a seperate time to become part of a mainland tour.
I believe there are owners of Z1 cars out there in the UK that we need to work with and encourage to join us on as many occassions as possible, either via the forum or as part of an organised social meeting.

I will try to attend either UK or Abroad trip.
I agree with many of the points raised.
UK trip would probably be better attended due to access and time issues.
I would expect UK routes to be easier to organize as there is plenty of local knowledge.
When I bought the Z1 I did not expect to drive it abroad but it's been to France (twice), Italy, Monaco, and Holland (twice). I would have taken it for a tour of Germany last year but the £/€ would have made it rather expensive so the next "mainland" trip will be when the exchange rate is better (after the election ?).
The Hull, Rotterdam ferry is great for a day trip to Holland if you get it on special offer. You leave Hull at 9pm, eat, drink, watch the entertainment and sleep on board and disembark at 8am. You then have to be back at the boat for 8pm for overnight to Hull. You can of coarse stay for extra days if you want but the overnight sleeper means you're making the most of the next day.

Wales for sure. Those roads and that scenery - superb.
Wouldn't be up for an abroad trip though - have been abroad many times in the Z1 anyway and, with the price of the EUR and CHF to the pound this days, it's fricking expensive.
Drove down to Villars (CH) after Christmas and the price of normal petrol was eye-watering - nearly EUR1.40 per litre on the m-ways, which is about £1.25 at today's exchange rate. Much better in Switzerland where it was CHF1.60 per litre, which is about 96p a litre, but that's still expensive by historic rates.

Sorry guys - I'm a bit late in on this one as it has been a busy time recently. I would go for Wales. Great scenery and as central as it can be (in a North - South perspective) without being simply a repeat of last year's (excellent) trip.
We did the Dordogne tour last September with Frederic. As a result of childcare issues and everyting else that was going on at the time, we ended up leaving home on Thursday morning and arriving back again on Monday lunchtime, having motored about 1400 miles in between. No problem with that (apart from the French speeding ticket!) but it was not relaxing. My fault for not adding a day each way to ease the journey but the point was we didn't have the time. Hence a UK trip has much greater appeal.

Wales
Wales!!
You would not want to break down there! lol I remember a school trip back in the 80s, our coach got stranded in the middle of knowhere and it rained for two weeks..
To be honest if it was a choice between Wales and Holland I would go to Holland. But if the tour was in England I would love to go on both.
The roads in Europe are so much more appealing to me, certainly smoother...
I'm sure the UK tour will be great irispective of the destination chosen and although Wales is not for me it certainly has brilliant landscape...

After the success of the Cotswolds Tour, it got me thinking how nice it would be if we could make it official and create our own yearly UK Z1 Tour, around the same time, as they do in Germany, France etc.
A UK based tour would certainly be more attractive to the majority with bigger attendances than if we crossed the channel.
So we kill 2 birds, we go ahead with a UK Tour, and those of us keen for the Holland experience, (Ben, Terry, Myself), represent the UK and join into whatever Harry has planned.
Harry, any further discussions on dates for your tour? I think you mentioned May 2010 initially....
Wales gets my vote for a UK gathering. I would not expect many would deem it possible to have an interesting weekend tour over the water. Roads near the coast are not inspiring and the cost would deter many.
My personal view is that one would need a week minimum for mainland Europe from here.
Count me in subject to dates, and well done Jet on getting things moving!

Re: Wales
I last went to Wales in 2002 by Motorbike with a few mates, everything that could go wrong went wrong, 10 hours of riding and we were still 150miles from Aberystwyth, we broke down, ran out of petrol several times, got lost, forgot my clear visor, it was the best road trip I have ever been on.benslick wrote:Wales!!

The roads..........HOLYEEEEEEEE MOLYEEEEEEEEE, for what we want Brecon Beacons, Elan Valley, Black Mountain, Snowdonia has it all, the bikes were in their element, and I cant see being in cars any different.
Not sure what horrors you experienced on your school trip, but this does not compare, Wales has everything we need for some fun on our tour. And if you really dont like it, you have Holland next on the agenda to look forward to.
A quick search for somewhere to stay brought up these.

Jet,
If my car is still in the UK when the tour happens I shall be there - wherever you choose to hold it.
However, I am hoping to get the car across to Italy once the silly season is over so will probably be installed in my nice garage over here from March onwards.
Once my car is over here it won't head back to the UK until MOT time (August) but if there is was tour on the continent I would probably pop along.
I'll keep my eyes on the details and let you know nearer the time.
Cincin,
Andy

Are the tax and MoT expiry synchronised?? MoT is required to renew a tax disc, therefore I took mine back to England only when the tax needed renewing (if you get my drift). If you do this, thereafter, of course, the tax and MoT are synchronised (if they hadn't been before....) and you can be assured of only needing one return trip per annum...andyhallas wrote:Jet,

Ok Jet, Wife is going to give me a pass for a few days! lol. Wales sounds good to me and she says that's the best place of them all, not that she's getting an invite
Now all we need is when, where, numbers and costs??

The majority seem to have voted for Wales, so that answers the `where`. Bank holiday May 2010 has been mooted with everyone seemingly available, so thats the `when` taken care of. Hotel prices are between £80-£120/pppn, using the above pictured locations as an example.
I am up for a double tour, HH mentioned organising something in the south of the Netherlands, a distance we can travel over a 3 day weekend.
Nice 1 Jet, hopefully I should be able to make it as it's going to be a busy year as my boy has just got his 2 year scholarship at Arsenal and he also plays for the Rep of Ireland
Glad your up for 2 tours. Are there any others up for Holland?? Also HH, any rough idea of when and where? or are you still planning? Cheers

Re: UK Tour 2010
Started researching the May Tour and edited the first post with some basic details, so please take a look.
To get the most out of the tour, I think we should plan this slightly differently to make use of the whole weekend. Due to the location and the fact we are all dotted about the country, it makes sense to meet at the hotel on friday, tour south wales on saturday and return on sunday.
Comments?

Hi Andy,
Most likely we will see you abroad somewhere, try and come to the tour in Netherlands, as thats a more realistic option, I dont know how far it is for you.
Good luck with the move, and keep in touch

I’ll go with whatever is good for all. It might be worth setting up a poll to see who prefers to stay where. Also is there any way to find out if they’ll take a deposit for group booking to hold the rooms? I’m ready to commit
Im open to suggestions if anyone has first hand experience of a hotel that meets all our requirements, but starting another Poll wont achieve much.
I will take care of deposits and get the contract signed to reserve a set amount of rooms.
Jet
I like the basic format for the Tour that you have listed, as it it allows us to travel on Friday afternoon/evening and settle in to the hotel for a casual evening and some beers before touring on the saturday. The banquet type meal on saturday evening will hopefully be of the "Ettington Hotel 2009" standard. If we can work towards getting numbers confirmed as soon as possible, we stand a chance of securing a good hotel with private parking in the countryside. We do need to get a move on as that weekend may be the start of the wedding bonanza that so often takes up the summer reservations in the decent hotels.
All looks good to me Jet. It's in the diaryJet wrote:Hombres,
Take a look at the tour review at the top of this page, check your diaries and lets have some feedback.
No money is required at this stage, but due to the number of rooms we will require in the same hotel, I have to start thinking about securing a reservation for all.
Merci Beaucoup
Seduced by the zed side
that's pretty much the situation, we left it late to reserve a hotel on the same level as Ettington, so my hands are tied for choice that satisfy all our requirements. I have provisionally booked 3* St Mellons (above) over Morgans as it is in secluded grounds with private parking outside our rooms, as opposed to Morgans which is a city centre hotel, so we will have to make the most of it.Bluebaur wrote:The banquet type meal on saturday evening will hopefully be of the "Ettington Hotel 2009" standard. Terry you'll be pleased to hear we've Negotiated a room rate of only £60 / room, so plenty of money for beer

The St Mellons looks good. I shall probably aim to drive down from London to join y'all early Sat morning and so would need a hotel room only on the Saturday night. Ties in with my plan to go again to La Vie en Bleu at the Prescott Hillclimb near Cheltenham on the Sunday.
For my part, I'm less interested in Cardiff and touristy things, than I am in blasting around the Brecon Beacons!!

Slight change in plan, St Mellons has not received very good reviews in Tripadvisor.co.uk, so I am looking into Morgans Hotel in swansea as an alternative which has received very good reviews, but is more expensive, some of the detail is in the first post, so please take a look and comment accordingly as prices are higher.
