Carbonfiber sidepanels for the Z1
Guys,
As we all know after 20 years a lot of Z1s have cracked sidepanels trough th age of time, wrong monted panels, to hard suspension or what ever other reason.
A guy in Germany named Michael Kabbert has now made the front sidepanels in carbonfiber. The sidepanels that BMW had made in 2003/2004 are a few centimeters to high and to long. So they don't properly fit. The carbonfiber panels have the same fit as the original panels on the Z1. So they fit much better. Also there have been some little adjustments made for uncomplicated fitting! They are also half the weight of the original panels. And they will no crack even after twenty years!
Maybe I should buy the panels myself. Gives me a reason to repaint the Zed! And make the car a bit lighter!!!
So guys is anyone interrested?

The front side panels of my Z1 (and the one of my brother in law's Z1) are still all right. However : any idea of the price : one by one, per couple, mass purchase ???

Would you guys be painting these panels if you managed to get a complete set or leaving them bare? As I thought CF changed colour over time in the Sun

You have to paint them mate! Because they don't have the typical carbonfiber look that you mean. They look normal black and only if you put them in the light you see some carbonfiber look.BBZ149 wrote:Yeah, no windows shoppers allowed lol.Holland Harry wrote:The other panels will come if there are enough people interested! If right side will be available, I'm sure I will buy 2 of them too.

Guys can someone help me understand the point of carbon fibre panels on a Z1, as it seems a very expensive way of increasing the power to weight ratio.
Especially if you have to paint these panels, by the time these panels are primed and painted surely they will not weigh much different to the originals, you can lift the originals with one finger.
If its weight your trying to save just get rid of your spare wheel and replace it will a can of tyre weld.(thats what i see them doing in Germany) or remove the block of concrete inside the rear bumper

My Z1 is too FAST and my Gallardo is too SLOW

I think you will find they are not making these to reduce weight, but as a better alternative to the original. These are much stronger than the standard panels and probably better made. The trouble with the original panels over time is the cracking of the mounting points ETC, my panels are fine and I only have one small crack on the driver’s side above the lock which has not got any bigger over the 5 years I have owned it which is apparently is a common problem!
I hope Michael eventually produces a complete set of panels and the prices come down, as eventually we will not be able to buy panels from BMW
Anyway there is no weight reduction needed on your beast to make it any faster lol

I agree the price must come down as the original panels are far too expensive. I have a small crack on my wing and they want £498 for a new one. If the carbon fibre panels were a similar price i would definetly buy one but at twice the price it doesnt seem viable.
I am suprised that BMW cant make these panels identical, but i will let you all know if this is true or not as i will be getting it on Friday.
By the way i called BMW in Park Lane for a part that is NO LONGER AVALIABLE ( NLA ) and after calls to BMW Germany they could not get it- so there claims that you can build any classic BMW from scratch doesnt seem to be the case
If someone doesnt address this problem then Senna will continue to dismantle these cars, as they are worth more in parts .

I agree and how is it that a rear quarter panel is the same price as a front wing.apollo wrote:I agree the price must come down as the original panels are far too expensive. I bought a new wing from BMW about a month ago and it bolted straight on, it was an exact replacement. The only problem was it cost £489

As parts become obsolete and huge price hikes, an alternative to the original is a great achievement. To undertake something like this must not have been easy, well done Volker and whoever else is involved, that is very impressive.VolkerZ1 wrote:Hello Z1 friends in England
