...to part with your Z1?

Not much in my case, but I am being sorely tempted by an Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Decent ones are £40k now....

Same here, a Vantage or Gallardo would do it for me.

Hmm. I am being sorely tempted.

Tempted to switch from two cars to just one car having just sold my normal car which means I am sitting here with £28k and a Z1 and wondering whether....

1 Reventon
2 Veyron
3 A Z1 with a v8
But if I could afford the 1st 2 options I wouldn’t need to sell a Z1! and they are just a Euro lottery winners dream :head:

I totally agree with Jetski it would be a v8 Vantage or a Gallardo. When the recession kicked in gallardo's were going as low as £50k one was selling for £45k...Now that same gallardo is £67k..It looks like I missed the boat but lets wait for the next recession to kick in...

If I was sticking to a classic car I've always liked a Series 1 E Type. I am aware they dont drive as good as they look and to buy a bad/half decent one would be a money pit (rust,overheating etc) and a good one silly money ... but I do like em. That really is an iconic shape in my eyes. And sometimes I do silly things :lol: E24 BMW M6 could be fun.

If we are not talking classic's yeah AM V8 Vantage/Gallardo/Pagani Zonda would all fit the bill although probably all classic's in the making. Hmm...best stick with the Z1 this is starting to sound expensive.

The downside, this is not any old everyday car, a Vantage means higher mileage, faster depreciation, more frequent maintenance schedule and expensive repair costs, petrol prices showing no signs of slowing, insurance will treble, and if Red Ken gets voted back in (pray to lucifer he does not) he will wage war on the london Hi-performance driver, not to mention a taxation class of £400+.

Then there is fading into obscurity.

The alternative is to get an 4yr old RS4 or M5 with the change and keep the Z1.

But then:

- I don't really do enough driving to justify two cars;
- but a Z1 is not a viable sole car for me;
- insuring an on-street M5 and a garaged Z1 = same as insuring a garaged Vantage;
- I can't see good Vantages dropping worse than an M5 (a smidgeon over £40k gets you a mint 5 yr old example with 20k on the clock from an Aston dealer);
- maintenance costs on one Vantage probably not higher than on an M5 and a Z1;
- annual roadtax would actually cost less for one car than two;
- no need to pay for resident's parking permit for second car;
- Red Ken would get us all anyway.

As ICE pointed out the supercar market has fluctuated with the financial times, the Z1 has been immune to that it seems, my first Z1 I bought for 16.5k 11 years ago, sold on pistonheads for 17.5k 2 weeks ago with double the mileage, the same cannot be said of an M5.
Most owners dont buy a Z1 for everyday use, I dont do enough miles either and to be honest I cannot justify even having 2 cars, but when I hit button no1 on my remote controlled doors, climb into the minimalist cockpit, push the start button and listen to that sporty Nouvalari soundtrack, thats all the justification I need.

None of that matters of course, if you have fallen out of love with the Z1? If not, then the Z1 and an S3 is more than enough to retain your street cred and have the best of both worlds, with change left over?

The Z1 hasn't fallen out of favour. It's just quite an expensive indulgence and sometimes a change is nice. And it's occurred to me that I could treat myself to a decent V8 Vantage which is a car I've liked from the moment I saw it, whereas sundry DB9s and DBSs, and most other expensive sportscars do nothing for me.

But we'll see. My first plan was to just get another normal car and keep the Z1 so I will probably still stick with that.

But not an S3. Or anything else with a miserable little 4 cylinder engine! V8 minimum!

RT, I must admit if I had to take my car to a specialist or BMW every time it needed something doing to it I probably would not own one! That’s why I do nearly all the work on my Z1 myself, even though the major parts are not cheap it’s the labour costs that’s a killer :head:

Oh don't get me wrong - mine went to the local village garage up in Suffolk for diagnosis and replacement when the water pump went tits up the other week. They are £35 an hour or somesuch and, after all six years of me having Z1s, are quite familiar with the little darlings!

I used to take the last one to Munich Legends for servicing as it was supplied to me by them and had a full BMW dealer/specialist service history and that seemed worth maintaining. This one doesn't, so I am less fussed.

I dont think you can compare a Z1 with an Aston or Lambo there miles apart.
The only reason you would consider changing is because the Z1 lacks power hence lacks the thrill.
The only thing that would get me out of my Zed is a V10 Z1 :wink: or arthritis :shake:

PS- Astons are crap and Lambos are expensive to service :head:and you are at the mercy of authorised repairers eg. Lambo wanted £375 to drill out my brake disc as they were bloked with brake dust :shock:

Its definitely an itch id love to scratch one day, but id always go back to a Z1, if I cant afford a Vantage follow GaryTheFish idea and buy a rusty old Mustang or Corvette muscle car for fun.

Shame, haha.
Escorts and BMW, you Essex boy!! I hated the Orion, one ugly car. My history came in two's. I had 2 E30s, 2 Honda CRXs, the VTEC was faaaaast! 2 Astra GSIs, 2 Z1s, 2 Golfs, a 240z, Astra GTE and a Transit Van!! I remember the VTEC reg, thats the car that taught me how to drive and got me points on my licence.
Thankfully the points are gone, but so are the driving skills.

Jet,
I didn't know you'd been inducted into the Dark Side by a CRX. I had one of those too. Bloody fabulous little car. I did over 90,000 miles in mine, mostly at the kind of speeds a 25 year old would in that kind of car and it never let me down - ever!
I rate the CRX a little like the Z1 in the way that it charmed its way into my heart. White 1.6i-16 G637VPP
The best bit as I remember it was racing against 205 GTi's and XR3 Turbos - they would stay level with you until the 'killing zone' in 2nd when you could use the extra 1500 rpm and nail their arses! Fantastic!
Oh to be young and reckless again......
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

As petrolheads, we all had our hot hatch phase I guess. As can be seen, mine involved a slight obsession with Mk2 Golfs...

During my driving career, my daily drivers have been:

1996-1998: M-reg Rover 115SD
1998-2000: J-reg Golf Mk2 1.8 GL
2000-2001: K-reg VW Golf Mk3 2.0 GTI
2001-2002: J-reg VW Golf Mk2 1.8 GLi
2002: H-reg VW Golf Mk2 2.0 GTI 16v (green 3dr)
2002: G-reg VW Golf Mk2 1.8 GTI 16v (red 3dr)
2002-2003: J-reg VW Golf Mk2 1.8 GTI 16v (black 5dr)
2003-2005: Y-reg Audi A3 1.8T quattro Sport
2005: 52-reg Audi S3 225
2006-2007: Russian-registered Renault Clio 1.4
2007-2009: 05-reg Alfa Romeo 156 GTA
2009-2011: 09-reg BMW 135i MSport
2011: 58-reg BMW 330d Touring

But I've also had a number of second cars along the way:

2004: B-reg VW Golf Mk2 1.8 GTI
2005: J-reg VW Scirocco GTII
2006-2009: K-reg Saab 9000 CSE 2.3
2007-2009: K-reg Mercedes E500 (W124)
2005-2010: H-reg BMW Z1 (green)
2010 onwards: H-reg BMW Z1 (black)

The most was in March 2009, when my garage momentarily numbered five (Z1, 135i, GTA, E500 and Saab).

Currently I just have the one (Z1), which is somehow curiously relaxing and refreshing! I must be feeling ill....

Hmmm. My list is short and, in places, sweet:

1981 to 2005 - 1971 BMW 2800cs (though not driving till June '83)
1983 to 1984 - 1973 Mini (Phlegm Gren)
1985 to 1985 - 1984 Metro City (Dung Brown) :oops:
1985 to 1986 - 1985 Metro City (Black)
1986 - 1987 - 1986 Metro MG Turbo (Black)
1987 - 1987 - 1987 Metro Turbo (Black)
1988 - 1989 - 1987 Metro City (Black)
1989 - 1990 - 1989 Metro MG Turbo (British Racing Green)
1990 - 1994 - 1989 Honda CRX (white)
1994 - 1996 - 1991 Honda Prelude (white)
1994 - 1996 - (Company) 1994 Rover 220sli Blue - Crap
1996 - 1998 - (Compnay) 1996 E36 318is (Black)
1997 to date - 1972 3.0csl (Blue)
1998 - 1998 - (Company stop gap) 1995 E36 318 tds (Green)
1998 - 2001 - (Company) 1998 E46 323i (Red)
2001 - 2003 - (Company) 2001 E46 320d Touring (Black)
1996 - 1996 - 1991 Metro 1.1s (Red)
1996 - 2002 - 1990 E30 325i Touring (White)
2002-2003 - 1998 Mercedes A160 (Silver)
2003 - 2006 - 2003 Honda Jazz (Green)
2003 - 2009 - 1990 E30 M3 Sport Evolution (Black)
2005 to date - 1990 Z1 (Black)
2009 to date - 2004 E46 M3 CSL (Silver Grey)
2006 - 2009 - 2005 Honda Jazz (Black)
2009 to date - 1934 Austin 7 (British Racing Green)
2009 to date 2003 E46 325i Touring (Black)

Some peaches and some howlers in there. Metros were cheap and easy to work on, but when you look at the frequency of replacement the impression is rightly one of inadequacy and expendability!

A common thread seems to be my liking of back cars.

The Rover was someone else's company car that I had to run thoruhg its mileage and was a p.o.s. car, while the other company cars were new and all did between 80,000 and 110,000 miles in quick time. Fortunately my mileage has come doen a lot since I started to work at home in 2005.

If you tot up what we have collectively spent on cars and increasingly on fuel over the past 20 years it would be truly terrifying.
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

Blimey, you guys have gone through some cars!! My ownership was 3years on average, you lot changed cars every year :shock:
Sam, like RT and his Golfs, you had an obsession with the metro haha.
I had the addictive 1.6 16v in white, before upgrading to the VTEC, also in white. The CRX will remain one of my best car memories.

Jet,

With all of them there is a story.....
The Metro was less of an obsession and more of a convenience at the time - like I say: easy and cheap to work on and since they didn't wear the miles too well they got replaced with alarming repetition.

I suppose in total we are looking at nearly 900,000 miles between that little lot.

Stand-out cars from my list have to be the CRX, the Sport Evo, CSL's (old and new) and the Z1. In an ideal world they'd all be in my garage now but sometimes one has to go to make another one possible.
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

Back to the Jag concept

Post by sfh3l »

Back to the Jag - yes, very nice indeed. I can't help thinking though that a Series 1 3.8 Coupe would do the trick so much better and would be w hole lot less contrived.

I LOVE the Z8, but if it were a choice between one of those and a 507 there would be no contest:

That’s so true, I feel young getting into it and old getting out of it lol :D

Sam did you not try getting hold of a 6R4 back in the day or were they virtually impossible to buy?

Cheers
Terry

Quite the list.

Well, the risk of parting with my Z1 has passed for now. I bought an E60 M5 today to go with the Z1.

Hello there,

Love is a funny old thing! I'll never get divorce papers from my Z1...
I plan to buy a Z8 when I'm ready to look after it! Also been thinking about an E61 M5 Wagon for family use and a bit of fun as there becoming very reasonable..

Cost me £28,990 for an Approved Used 07/07 with 30k on the clock. Interlagos Blue with Extended Black Merino interior, walnut dash, decent FG and an epic sports exhaust system.

RT,

That's one serious machine you have there - I guess you won't miss the 135i so much now?

Mmmmmmm M5 Interlagos & Black. Respect is due 8-)

Do:-
Enjoy the poise, power and build quality
Don't:-
Reset the fuel consumption meter prior to a spirited drive!

Enjoy your rocketship RT
Best regards,

Sam Lever.
