It's official, just got off the phone with my cousin! Could not quite believe it but he has purchased a Green Z1 from a guy in Texas and is driving it back to California next weekend!
It's was a Hamburg based car before it was brought into the US with 138,000 km on the clock which he purchased for the grand total of $44,000 USD....
He loved the UK tour and just had to have one and I have to say this is the coolest news, cruising around California in a Z1 will be brilliant...
He says he won't drive it much but it will be a nice change from his Jap Accura Honda thinggy he drives daily! Can't wait to visit him...
USA Tour!
Re: USA Tour!
Oh boy....that's gonna be a smokin' hot drive across the desert without AC. The American southwest is not Z1 friendly in summer. It was something like 44C in Phoenix this week, and has been over 40C for many days this month...one of the hottest summers on record for Texas and Arizona.benslick wrote:It's official, just got off the phone with my cousin! Tell cuz to carry plenty of water and be safe. I'd offer a layover for him in Tucson, but I am headed to Ireland right now to escape the heat myself!!!

"BIG" is a relative term. $44k would be about $32-34k for the car, and another $10-12k for shipping/emissions testing/etc. At current exchange rates $32-34k is ~20k GBP or 24k EURO. While that may still seem a bit high, these cars are still extremely rare in North America, so the laws of supply and demand have Ben's cousin's car priced about right if it is in good shape...even with 132k km's on the clock!!!Racing Tortoise wrote:They command big money in the States it seems! $44k!!

US tour
If you take a northerly route there are 3 Z1 compadres here in Colorado!
Ben,
Give me a ring when you are headed to LA. As Rick says, there are 3 Z1's in Colorado, mine in Arizona and a few more in Cali. Logistics permitting, it would be cool to meet up somewhere in the middle!
While M20's are indeed cheap, they rarely fail. When well cared for with regular oil and timing belt changes, they will last at least 250k MILES !!! It's the rest of the Z1 chassis/body that gets a bit fragile with the extra miles. Also, a Z1 with an engine number that does not match the chassis will be less desirable (and hence less valuable) here in the United States/Vereinigten Staaten/Etats Unis...

I've also always liked the E24's. I once owned a 1980 633CSi and rued the day I sold it to make room for "something newer".
Barring valve adjustments and any M-part replacements, the running costs are about the same as any other E24. I would say that to run one everyday would be a money pit, but as a "summer only" car, the M6 was a deal just too good for me to pass up. With 121k miles on the clock it still runs VERY strong. Come join Ben on the USA tour when he comes over and I'll let you drive it!!!
