Air Conditioning

Post by Bruno »

Hi Guys

Someone knows some Z1 owners equipped by Air Conditioning System ??
Someone knows some Z1 owners who have fit on their cars an Air Conditioning System in after market ??

On this Forum, there are some Z1 owners who live in tropical place (USA - Florida for example) so how they ride with their roadsters without Air Conditioning ??
I believe BMW have built few Z1 equipped by Air Conditioning System for EAU Market (Dubai, Abu Dabi, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrein, etc…)
But I’ve never seen any Z1 like this (YouTube, for sale, on the Forum, and so on….) ??

This winter, I’ll move/remove interior so I could fit on an Air Conditioning System from E30 for example !!
If someone has an idea, I’m very interested !!

Many Thanks

Air Con

Post by Traumschwarz »

Salüt Bruno!

I have a E30 Touring Air Con / heat exchanger system in my Z1. ( Behr 9432610000) (This number works for BMW as well).

Pictures? Have a look in Ebay i.e. Art No.120789652251
The two silver cubes (two motors) take lots of space from the radio system ( the radio slot has max. 15 cm depth :head: ).
The compressor is built on the right hand side close to the head light.
this system hardly leaves room for the bmw stereo amplifier (should you have one infront of the stick shift. )

A bientot!
Peter

Post by Bruno »

Hello My Friend,

I'm sorry but my english is not perfect and I don't understand every you say me !!

So You have an E30 with Air Conditioned but after ......????

Your Z1 is equipped with Air Conditioned ?? That is right or wrong ??
Plesase could you explain more and give me details about your last message !!
I known someone who has equipped his Z1 by Air Conditioned system from E30 but it's a quite hard work....

There were some Z1 with Air Conditioned just for EAU Countries (Dubaï, Koweit, etc....)

But I'm wondering how some people who rides in Florida, can ride with their Z1 without Air Conditioned ??

Bye, Bye - "Z1 for the best" !!

It's combined with the Behr System 9432610000. I didn't build it. So I cannot tell you if it is difficult.

Air Conditioned

Hi,

Many Thanks Guys for your information !!

Thanks Lord Taki
I saw your eBay link, it's very intresting and no so expensive too !!
Are you intrested to make this conversion for your Z1 too ??

But It should be better to have some advices before to start this conversion.

Thanks Traumschwarz
Who have made your conversion in your Z1 ?? :head:
Do you have some photos of interior like Air Conditioned Swicht ??
Do you have a Compressor from E30 ??

But the Behr System 9432610000 is not complete because we must have Compressor, Evaporator from E30, etc.... ??? Insn't it ??

Bye, Bye...
Z1 for the best....

If you have the time and space, I think it should be no problem to install the AC. But I never tried it.

I don't know

Do you have some photos of interior like Air Conditioned Swicht ??

The switch is in the right hand side of the heating panel
BMW Part Number: 61311380557

Do you have a Compressor from E30 ??
I believe so, I didn't check though

yes...the compreissor fits next to the alternator and the dryer sits infront of the right headlight. The Evaporator AFAIK belongs to the BEHR System and is installed inside the car.

Bye, Bye...
Z1 for the best....
Here I took a picture for you

I have installed an AC in my car a couple of years ago. I've used 325 E30 air conditioner. There were some problems with installing comressor (it was necessary to modify it's mounts) and AC radiator and fan.

Hi Bruno,

I do not know what the Z1 owners in Florida do, but here in Arizona I keep my Z1 in the garage most of the summer. I drive it very early in the morning or very late at night (after the sun goes down). My understanding is that when you add AirCon, you have to replace the heating system in the Z1 to make room for it. I would rather have heat and drive my Z1 in winter, spring and autumn than to have AC and only be able to drive when it is hot outside! Afterall, the reason they put heaters in convertibles is so that you don't have to waste a perfectly sunny day for top-down driving just because it is a little chilly outside !:D

Air Con

Post by Traumschwarz »

Yup, exactly!

the AirCon/Heat Exchanger that is installed in my Z1 gives me the option of both, like in any other car.
Does a Z1 need an Air Con? dunno. In arabic countries or Texas/Arizona maybe. I haven't tested it throroughly so I cannot tell you if is a "must have"

Cheers

Air Conditioned

Post by Bruno »

Hi,

All of your answers are very interesting, and I would like to study this issue because I moved down many interior parts so....

Anyway it must have many time and especially all of this part to make a work well done....

Is it necessary to have Air Conditioned in Z1 it's a good question !!
In this states of USA or Arabian Countries for example Yes for sure !!
Because you can ride on Z1 early at the morning or at the evening...

But all of Roadster are equipped with Air conditioned now !!
so why not our Z1 ??

Z1 for the best...

Yurik,

That's different from what I have read previously, so very interesting to know! Do you have any details on where everything is installed--condenser, receiver-drier, compressor, and high and low pressure fill points? If it's just like E30, then how does everything fit inside the already crowded small Z1 console?

Is yours the E30 unit as well, Peter, or is it an aftermarket unit? I could sure use AC here in AZ. I have to park my Z1 for most of the summer due to the heat, so would be nice to actually drive my car year 'round!

Hey Z1-folks,

now don't get put off buy the upper picture. It only looks like a mess cause the few wirings are barely sorted.
The red wring is so very japanese. Some are for the side mirrors, the originals need to be extended, so that they fit under the E30 AC-unit. What you see is more than necessary. A little bit of a hassle is placing the heater controll bowden cables for them to work properly.

Since its simply too cold here to stand outside DIYing, I decided to postpone all further refurbishing till spring break. Maybe them I can give more info. At the passengers side you can see two coolant hoses leaving for the area underneath the bonnet.

Cheers

Well, it's really cold now in Ukraine, so I'm not sure I'll come to garage next few weeks. But I can make some pictures when it will be a little bit wormer here! :)
