Door control Module

Post by Bad-Yeti »

Hey hey guys,

Not been around for quite a while due to disasterous relationship lol.

Hit a bit of a snag though in the form of part number 61.35-2 297 024.3 yep the driver's side door controller. I think it's on it's way out as I need to give it a tap to get the door to work <eek>

BMW informed me that they had no stock.

Anyone know where it's possible to get hold of one?

Many thanks in advance.

Hello,

Before trying to find a replacement Door Control Unit you must try a very cheap alternative.

I had the same problem with my drivers door - especially in winter - the cure & it is a cure, is to take the cover off the unit and give it a good spray with Contact Cleaner. If you are really handy you can take the circuit board out a clean all the contacts as well.

My local BMW specialist (LINWAR in Southport) did this for me over a year ago and there has been no further problems.

If you are not confident to do this yourself then any competant auto-electrician should be able to do it in less than 1 hour.

Hope this is helpful !!

Regards,

ChrisM.

Sorry to hear about this problem.
As you already figured it out this problem is about to become a nightmare due to the unavailability of this part.

We talked about it during the 25th birthday in Munich and it seems depending on the symptoms it is fixable ... or not (50% of chance, don't ask me more).

I suggest you to contact Mr Schaffer or Mr Hoffmann in Germany:

I'm very tempted to send one to one of our shops and see if they can reverse engineer it. Does anyone by any chance have a wiring diagram for the unit?

I've had the same problem last year and after some investigations how to repair it I finally bought a new one.

A wiring diagramm won't help because the original microchip is discontinued as well. Thus if anyone wants to rebuild the control unit a programmable controller with some I/O ports is needed. This has been done by Marco Kühnel from http://www.Z1Z1.de some years ago but it's only one single prototype.

Currently the door control unit is available at http://www.kfz-schaffer.de only. This is because the original manufacturer Brose wants to sell all Z1 door parts (they need storage place) to BMW but BMW won't by them. Thus they asked Franz Schaffer and he bougt all of the remaining door parts including all door control units.

The latest price at BMW was about EUR 800,- I don't know Franz's current price but I imagine it will be in the same region.

FWIW, Classic Heroes reckon they can be rebuilt. If the only alternative is an €800 bill, might be worth a call. Can't remember who they said actually did the work, sorry.
FOR: Balance
AGAINST: Yours will be in doubt at this price

Hello Again,

Before going for a new unit (& who has got £850+ going spare) consider again having the control unit spring cleaned.

I checked with LINWAR today & they will happily clean the circuit board contacts and spray with contact cleaner.

They are based in Southport but you could send the unit to them by Fedex or similar & they will return the same way.

Look at http://www.linwar.com or better still ring Ian Thompson on 01704 540047 for more details and a quote.

Regards,

ChrisM.

If it needs a tap to get it working then this will be an easy fix. If contact cleaner on the relay points and in the connector plug does not work then you have a dry joint and the solder will need to be reflowed on the cct board.
If you know what you are doing this can be fixed quite easy as it will not be a chip failure!

These guys seen to rebuild and repair modern automotive electrical units. May be worth enquiring if they could look at the Z1 door modules given the units are no longer readily available and the failure rate will likely increase.
