Z1 Audio

Post by Jet »

Anyone know where I can have the Original Head Unit repaired? The Cassette player has never worked, would like to get it running again, even though I dont use it.

Model is Sony XR7302

Nice idea,

after posting I managed to find another Z1 Branded sony unit via ebay going cheap, fully working. Also found these guys http://www.a-e-l.com who specialise in audio from that era.
Re iPOd, it must be possible, its just inputs and power, which go where. Not tried a DIN to Min Jack plug, that might work. Alternatively, using Ipod to mini jack and USB cable, its possible to chop off the jack and wire it to the inputs of your DIN plug, then snip the USB and wire the power to the head units power.

This unit can drive CD chnager in the trunck via a big DIN plug.
It should be possible to arrange connection "simulating" CD changer. Unfortunately, I never succed to find wiring diagram for this DIN plug

Sony Z1 unit ?

Mine is the OEM factory radio cassette model by Blaupunkt. FM radio reception is best described as average at best and only has the two speakers in the footwells. You also forget just how much cassette tapes hiss.

Technology is a funny thing, after years of cackle, we got CD and MP3, now they are adding hiss and cackle to songs, cassette drives and pushbutton radios are now worth more than new age tech, due to their rarity.

We are never satisfied.

Hi Darren,

Not bidding, I bought it a few months ago, the old one had a problem chewing tapes I was hoping to get fixed, do you not have one or is it broken?

I have the radio / CD that came with the car that works fine but it is not the original one. I was thinking of changing it for the original version.

Jet--As you probably know, the Z1 branded units were only made for the first ~200 cars before BMW switched to the more common Blaupunkt and Alpine units from the 3 and 5 series of the vintage. I am not aware of the Sony units with Z1 branding ever being sold for other uses, so there are very few of these left with Z1 markings. To find a working one is a rare find to being with, and to find it cheap on ebay is extremely good luck!

I have seen evidence (although not recently) of Z1 branded units going for 600+ euros in Germany. Ever since I saw that, I installed a modern Alpine CD/iPod head unit and put my Z1 Audio in a ziploc bag to keep it in a safe place only to be used for car shows and future sale of the car (as if that will ever happen :D )

Do you have the XR7302 service manual? I think you can reverse engineer the DIN from the schematics in there. There are several websites that sell the manual for $5-10 USD. Sending you a PM...

Hey Budget,

I think it was luck, the auction ran the same time as this other listing, a Z1 unit with Z1 branded CD Changer, which is unheard of, all eyes were on that, including mine. No other reasonable explanation I can think of, as to why I won it with no other bidders. Good old ebay, you win some, you lose some.
