I've recovered my seats-with pics.

Post by Green Genie »

Having seen Bluebaur's refurbished seats at Silverstone made mine look very old and tatty, what I did not know was that BMW had done a small production run of the FunGelb (yellow) material. Bluebaur had picked this up from a posting earlier (which I had missed) from Pat Slade.

So being as there are no more new seats available at this time and last price was something ridiculous like £1500-£2000 I bought myself some cloth and set off to my local trimming company B-trim in Enfield to have the seats recovered. Many many thanks to Roger ( Bluebaur) for the loan of the Leder-Pflege dyes to recolour the leather parts they make a huge difference and the colour match is spot on.

Not much of this cloth left at BMW and probably wont be available again, so if you've got tatty yellow seats get in quick the end result is worth it and keeps the car original and a lot cheaper than new seats (which you cant get :head: ). Of course this is of no help to you guys with the camoflage seats where I believe the seats are no longer available and what BMW did have was of dubious quality being 20+ years old.

So to sum up the Z1

1 We've got bullet proof engines (just change the oil /coolant and cambelt) and they will do many miles.
2 We've got a plastic body that won't rust.
3 The chassis is galvanised so that won't rust.
4 We've got seats and interiors that are so fragile that after about 30k miles look like the car has been to the moon and back.

The guy's at B-trim did a good job here's the pics.

Old seats.

Genie,

Its so easy to forget the patterned material has purple flecks in it, until you see the before and after. Any chance of a picture for the Mag? If possible, one with a Landmark or nice background

Nice work.

Looks very nice. One of these days I need to get someone to have a go at the grey leather in my car (eg the dash, door sills) which is looking awfully scuffed.

Hi Jet

Yes the purple flecks in my seats had been bleached out by the sun...guess we had better summers in the 80s/90s than now.

I will try to get a picture for you but the car will most likely be on a SORN end of this month so not much time left :(

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but -

OP (or anyone) - can you post a link / contact details for where you sourced the cloth from? Even when the thread was first posted, my normal contacts insisted none was available. Maybe they're right, I'd just like to check.

Thanks for your help.

Hi tg184

The material I got came from a BMW main dealer, Specialist cars in Stevenage but any BMW main agent should be able to source it. It was held in Germany and was ordered in, took about 5 days. I believe it had been remanufactured in a limited batch.

The part No is: B51.92.2.212.131 I was advised by my upholsterers to order 2 metres but when it was fitted there was quite a bit left over (maybe 1 metre would do ???) which I have kept in case anything happens to my own seats.

When I collected the material (August 2012) I asked how much more was left in Germany answer given was 12 metres  So you need to be quick and check if they have any left. Good luck and let us know how you get on, Z1 interiors are one of the more challenging aspects of ownership.

Thanks for the very detailed response. I'd thought the cloth was sold in packs sized for a pair of seats, I hadn't realised that you had to choose how much to order.

Bit of a dilemma, then. Given the price, I don't really want to order more than I need. There again, I don't want to order less and have the trimmer announce there isn't enough... :? Maybe it'll be safest to stick to 2m. I'll see whether my local dealer reckons they can still get some, and what they reckon it'll cost. Cheers.
