2014 Technical Day

Post by Jet »

Been giving this some thought, a number of factors to take into consideration, location in relation to airport and where everyone is travelling from, costs, equipment, accommodating our host and guests, keeping costs down and ensuring you get something out of the day.

The objective is for our guest to demonstrate how these tasks are performed that we can confidently repeat the process in the comfort of our own homes, such as:

Door maintenance and troubleshooting
Panel repair
Leather repair and restoration'.

To take this forward I need to get an idea on who is serious about attending, so please quote the below and add your names to the list

Jet,

I can provide the use of our race team workshops which are near Derby if that helps. It is about 15 minutes drive from East Midlands airport.

Hi @all,

one litte question from "Kossyk-Enterprises :D " ...

I have already threated Jet to bring Chrissy with me to the "Technical Days 2014". (Maybe we are doing one or two days of sightseeing in London before ;) )

So, if some of you are interested in leather care too, we can include a lether care and refurbishment seminar into the technical days for those who are not intersted in mechanical things or know that they have not technical talent... ;)

So if you are intersted in, please let us know.

Best regards
Michael

Brilliant, we have a choice of location and the expertise. Michael, we can talk in more depth about your availability and when suits you. I would recommend summer, but this is London and thats no guarantee of good sightseeing weather.

I'm in Long Eaton and a Z1 is always on the shopping list, so I would be interested in coming along as long as I won't make it too crowded.

I'd be interested. Might depend on location, as I'll be coming up from the wrong side of the M25. :(

Thats a long time to wait, why not post a clip of the problem, someone might recognise it, jog some memories and help diagnose the problem.

It's just stopping about 0.5cm too high and is fine if I put a couple of washers under the top wing mounting to lift it out of the way. As the door works OK I'd rather do it properly, later, than mess it up now. Michael has explained how I might fix it but as always I could make it worse rather than better -"it ain't completely broke".

Depending on the date, Friday or Saturday allied to a mini tour maybe.

Venue ? Something like this ? A modern workshop with toilet and lounge facilities. I estimate it will easily accommodate 15 cars with space to work, 20 at a push. 20min from M1 (J12 /13) and 10 mins from A1/M Baldock. An initial enquiry suggests it may be available to hire for a day.

TJ,

Things to consider:

The Door workshop will take 1.5 days minimum.
Hamburg to Heathrow return flights.
Michael/Chrissy arriving maybe Thursday, 1 day sightseeing
Overnight accommodation London.
2 days to troubleshoot doors, panel repair and interior (Sat, Sun?)
Accommodation Saturday night close to venue.
Combining the technical day and tour will require a week of activities (doable?).
Tools, Jacks, Ramps etc.
Pre 9am Post 6pm access.
Catering?

Give me a call, we can compare quotes, I have the 15,000 sq ft Hangar pricing, daily rates with lights and sockets, non refundable paid in advance.

Sorry to go off on a tangent (and to make it worse, I'm not a Z1 owner either), but I'm fascinated by the photo of the aircraft hanger.

That aeroplane looks like a Percival Mew Gull similar to the one Alex Henshall flew to South Africa in 1939 to set the world record for such a return journey.

A Percival Mew Gull - something that is rarer than even a Z1, just imagine that

Brilliant Weekend Jamal. well done and thanks from us all for the effort and organisation you put into making this happen.

My steering wheel is definitely less animated now and what remains by way of wobble feels much more like a simple (slight) imbalance in one of the front wheels, so thanks too for that tip, which I would never have arrived at myself.

Good to know that I have now reinforced both front wing mounts, as I had planned to do this winter. All I have to do now is the nubuk (second time) and repair the crack in one rear wing and the (now) two missing lower lugs on front and rear wings - will it ever end?

Great weekend, from start to finish. Looking forward to the get-together in September now.
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

2014 Technical Day plus cleaning tips

Post by Ian M »

Thanks everyone for a great and informative weekend, Special thanks to Jamal for organising us all and to Rene for being very patient with us all with our constant questions. I learned a lot so now hoping to sort out my panel gaps and sticking door catch. At the end of Sunday I was asked quite a few questions on cleaning and prep etc, so for Jamal here is the order in which you can clean your Golf and for anyone else interested I have listed a great web site that explains everything to do with polishing complete with video's. Once again thanks for a great weekend and see you all at Silverstone.

In case you lost that piece of paper Jamal.

Wash car with a decent car shampoo in warm water
Remove any tar with tar remover or even thinners from bodywork and wheels
It might be worth spraying Iron X over the body and wheels to remove metal contaminants, after 2-3 minutes wipe over with a damp sponge then leave for another 2-3 minutes your paint and wheels should start to streak purple.
Wash again.
Clay the bodywork and don't forget to apply plenty of lube (I use DoDo juice - slippy, It's quite cheap and will last a few applications) Tear a piece off the clay bar about the size of a 50p piece, don't rub it into the paint, let it glide over. when it starts to get dirty fold it over to make a clean piece. Do a panel at a time and then wipe down with a micro fibre cloth. The paintwork should start to feel smooth.
If you have scratches or swirls it's time to get out the electric polisher, get a DA model that I demonstrated with rather than a rotary one. It's a lot easier and safer to use. If you have deep scratches get a cutting pad with the polisher followed by a polishing pad and then finally you can get a finishing pad if you want. You also need a couple of polish compound depending on the condition of the paintwork. Don't go for a heavy T cut if you only have swirls. Do a panel at a time and clean off with a micro fibre cloth.
Now the final part...WAX. Make sure the car is in the shade and not hot otherwise it will bake to the surface, the same goes with the polish as well. Try the sample pack you got from me, that should do the whole car. A little spreads a long way so apply a nice thin layer over the whole car with a micro fibre cloth or wax pad if you have one, when finished go to the panel you started with and start rubbing off with a clean micro fibre cloth. If you think it needs it you can give it another coat (3 max)
Stand back and admire and have a cup of tea and a handful of Haribo (wash hands first)

A good web site for tips and video clips go to http://www.autogeek.net/detailingtips.html

Hope this helps, If anyone has any questions just let me know.

Great write up Ian. You make it sound so simple.

After reinforcing both front wings while on the Tech Day, I took the opportunity of a wash-out Bank Holiday Monday to spend some time on the rears. Had them off and reinforced the wing-top area of the driver's side where there is a small crack where it had been pushed up by the door and also repaired a crack on the passenger side on the bottom edge. All sorted now.

I now need to go away and scratch my head about making up the 'hooks' for the fixings of the lower edges of the panels, as there are a number missing already on my car. I am thinking along the lines of aluminium sheet, cut to fit and then bonded to the inside face of the wings so as to spread the stress. The wings won't be coming off again this year though, so this is very much an 'thought in progress' at the moment.
Best regards,

Sam Lever.
