Z1 Cylinder Head advice needed

Post by johnster64 »

Hello there, I need to replace the cykinder head on my Z1 which is located in Bahrain.

Is the cylinder head common to any other BMW model?

Does anyone have one for sale in the UK (and I can arrange shipping) ?

Many thanks for reading

Always bad when you have this trouble.
I dont now from wich model you can use the cilinderhead
but i now that a 2.5 engine from other models wil not fit into a z1.
The engine mountingstud is on a different place.

Hi, mind if I ask how you know that with absolute certainty? Is it something you personally attempted?

The block yes, but the cylinder head appears to share the same OEM part numbers across all 3 models, Z1, 325i and 325ix, 11121707032??

I agree with Jet - all the E30 325i variants use the same cylinder head, known as the 885 head named after the casting number. That said good ones are getting hard to find - many high mileage heads have cracked.

Felix,
What would it take to fit a 325i in a Z1? Have you ever seen this done?
We know the sump and block are different, does this mean the z1 sump wont physically fit? I didn't think it would, as i tried, but I spoke to a chap last week, who said he has done it? And if it does fit, what about the dip stick? Presumably you would have to seal the hole and make another further back, then add the oil pump?

If anyone can clarify, would appreciate separating fact from theory.

It would be very difficult. The block on the 325ix/Z1 is different; the oil pump is in a different place and even the sump pans on the 325ix and Z1 differ from one another. Is it possible to use a 325i block in a Z1? Probably, yes. Is it practical? No. The machine work and oil passage modifications would be significant and beyond the skills of most shops and beyond the budget of most of their customers given that 325ix/Z1 blocks are out there, if rare.
