Tyres

Post by SCORPION »

The state of my front tyres caused some concern at the technical weekend. They passed the MOT a couple of months ago but the sidewalls are definitely badly cracked.
Mytyres,co.uk have
Toyo Proxies T1-R at £105 rated F / E / 71db
Hankook Ventus Prime at £97 rated C / B / 70db
The Hankook are cheaper and far better rating.
If I get the Hankooks are they better on the front or rear (wet grip is better)

Has anyone any advice on which to buy ?

I fitted a new set of tyres last september.

Continental Sport Contact 2 - 225/45/16ZR.

They have a similar tread pattern to the original Pirellis. I am very pleased with them.

The Toyo T1R Proxes are a good tyre and I use them on the TVR, they have an arrowhead tread pattern and a relatively soft tyre wall so are over inflated by 4 psi against recommended pressure.

I've used the T1-R on my Z1 for years now and I rate them very highly. I also used them (same size even) on my old E30 M3. The 'must have' tyre for that car used to be the Goodyear Eagle F1 (old tread pattern), which were on the M3 when I got it, but over the time I owned the car these moved to 'NLA' and I had to look for a useful substitute. I was a great fan of the Eagle F1 but the Toyo is a better tyre, at least for a small light car like the Z1. That would get my vote.

FWIW, I had a lousy experience with Hankooks on a Corrado VR6, and although it was a -long- time ago, I'd personally need alot of persuading ever to go near anything they turn out again.

Yes - I meant to say that I am surprised by the ratings Scorpion quotes.

My experience of the Toyos must come to about 15,000 Z1 miles and a further 50,000 in my M3 and I would say that their wet weather grip is not very reassuring for the first couple of miles, but after they are warm there is nothing lacking at all and they certainly manage to disperse as much water as I have every seen from a tyre of this size. I would say that they are a tyre that very much suits the little Z1. Interesting what Toni says re the sidewalls. I hadn't formally read that anywhere else but would concur with what he says in that there is a suppleness about them that again suits the car.

Tyres are a very personal thing though and it is like asking for recommendations about what music you would listen to or football team to support - you'll get a load of conflicting stuff and in the end you just have to try some and see how you get on......

+1 for these tyres - very impressed :thumb:

To be fair not many of us ever wear out a set of tyres on these cars, due to lack of use so cracks + age will always see off a set of tyres.

Hi
Thanks for the information.
Sam, I think you are probably right, it depends on the car as much as the tyre. Toyos it is - I might as well have 4 matching and I don't drive on the limit very often and prefer sunshine to the rain anyway.
PS the cracks are too big for araldite

I wish we could get the BFGoodrich KDW in NT here in Europe....

That thread pattern just appeals to me...

I remember getting a set of BF Goodrich tyres on my Dad's E12 528i. The car was completely undriveable!
We came to the conclusion that all of the tyre-screeching you used to see on things like the Rockford Files (RIP James Garner by the way) was not so much their fast driving as the appalling tyres they used.
The goodrich's were so bad that we junked them after 500 miles and went back to good old Michelin XDX

I think tyre development has moved on a bit since James Garner featured in that series....
