MPH Speedo converters

The cheap way to pass an MOT. These can be stuck on or left loose thus enabling removal at time of selling the car.

Is it an MOT failure if your speedo isn't MPH?

In theory, yes. In reality, probably not. I had a LHD car with a KM speedo that passed 7 MOTs without comment. And many Z1 owners have cars without side indicator repeaters that pass their MOTs without a problem.

It took a bit of finding, but here it is. The MOT rules for testing a speedo...

http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m4s06000701.htm

DVLA need the vehicle to have an MPH/KPH (both) speedo before they will issue a UK number plate, but it's not an MOT requirement.

Re side indicators. If vehicle first used after 1 April 1986, there should be side indicators...

http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m4s01000401.htm

I don't know if there are any exclusions for imports.

Thanks for clarifying.

The car I brought into the UK from France never got inspected by the DVLA as I had a certificate of conformity to EU standards from the manufacturer. It just needed an MOT.

I did have one MOT station refuse to even start an MOT on the Z1 because of the lack of side repeaters - the tester said that there was no way he could pass it despite having passed some 15 times before that, at least once by the same garage! So I just took it to another garage and they've passed it 5 years in a row without comment.

This must be new, because I've had several UK-registered (but imported) LHD cars (Z1, 500E, Golf) with KPH-only speedos without any issue.

I only know what I've been reading on the web. There may be an exemption for cars >10 years old. It seems that some get UK plates from DVLA and some don't. I've not found an official list of things DVLA are looking for in order for them to register an imported car.

The MOT seems to have a different set of rules, but I can find them :) .

My speedo is showing white flecks of light when illuminated so I was thinking of doing the conversion.
Is it easy ?
Perhaps something for the next Z1 technical day.
