What do you replace a Z1 with ?

After twelve and a half very happy years with the Z1 I sold it last summer. The garage was empty and I needed another fun car but what was it to be. I like the formula: plastic body, bombproof mechanicals and something different (the doors). I tried to buy a Daimler SP250(Dart) that needed full restoration but the friend that has it would not be tempted by my cash. So, I reverted to American muscle and bought a Corvette C5. I've already owned a C3 Corvette and a Camaro before I had the Z1
The C5 fits the bill. It has a few advantages over the Z1, loads of boot space, 2 extra cylinders, 1 extra gear, double the horses, air con and the fun bit - headup display. Running costs, tax, insurance, fuel are about the same as the Z1, I can get 35mpg on the motorway. It lacks German build quality but bang for buck cannot be beaten.
It's been tucked up for the winter but will be unsorned in a couple of days and I will try to drop in on some Z1 meets in the future.

Are you planning on quietly sneaking up on them?

:D

Slightly off topic, but speaking of sneaking, an XF Jag cruises past my house in a matt british racing green wrap, black wheels and the most seductive V8 sound I have ever heard at 30MPH.

Since then, the V8 has moved up my bucket list.

As it happens I can sneak in the Corvette. The Scorpion exhausts on the Z1 were loud but the power did not match the noise. I could have had the car with a Corsa (didn't like the name) exhaust but asked to retain the original which is very quiet until you floor the throttle. So keep an eye on your rear view mirrors.

Hi Scorpion and nice to see you back here.

I approve! The 'vette is a lot more tempting a proposition than a rotten old Dart - you did the right thing. Classics need to be cars that you can jump into and turn the key to enjoy, with the "just add petrol" method. An old Daimler is never going to be that simple.

Take care and you are right "there ain't no substitute for cubes", as they say in V8 circles.
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

Anyone who says money isn't everything hasn't found the right classic car yet.
