Rear Axle Problems

Post by tenroom »

Noticed a horrible whining/roaring sound on the motor the other day. After inspection by a BMW specialist it turns out the rear axle is knackered and has to be either replaced or overhauled. :bawl:

They reckon it's wear and tear but the damn thing's only done 50,000 miles - I'm majorly pissed off. BMW reckon on £634 + VAT for a replacement not to mention fitting :head: but I'm thnking about reconditioning it. Anyone know a REPUTABLE specialist who could do the job properly ?

I presume you mean the diff or do you mean a drive shaft (from the diff to each wheel) or the prop shaft (from the gearbox to the diff). Any which way 50K miles is early.

Yeah it's the diff that's gone - sorry should've been more specific. Very early indeed. These things are built to last 150K easily and I'd like to know what caused it so I'm not doing the same job again in 50,000 miles' time

That's most unusual. All I can think of is a fluid leak that led to the internals doing a coffee grinder routine on themselves. Normally they wear gracefully till old age and then you might get some slop or whine with time (sort of like people really!).

I would have thought the BMW monkey sorry technician should have noticed any leaks when servicing the car. I would think the diff should be good for 150,000 not 50,000.

What chassis number is your car? From memory early cars used a normal 6 cylinder diff but with a different rear cover (easily swapped). Later cars (perhaps when the E36 production came on line?) used a different diff that's harder to find.

Reading a German forum it seems swapping in a 3.91 rear diff is a nice performance upgrade. Top speed is reduced but that's not going to matter to most Z1 drivers.
