Greetings,
My car just failed its MOT on account of the steering rack, has anyone had theirs replaced recently? Is it a serviceable or exchangeable part, or simply a new one?
In addition, On the subject of Side Indicators:
The first MOT tester I approached insisted it will fail without them, and the very nice man offered to install some "nice ones" for me. Which I declined.
The 2nd MOT tester said "if it was manufactured without them, then it doesent need them.
What is the law on this?

Steering rack replacement.....
I'd go with the second MOT tester. After all, there are cars on the road that were made before rear seat belts were compulsory, and there is no requirement to retro fit them. If they are fitted they must comply with the regs, but it doesn't matter if they are not there. On the steering rack, it depends what is wrong with it. Is it excessive play, damaged gaiters, leaking power steering fluid or something else. There are places that can re-build worn steering racks for less than a replacement, doing it on an exchange basis. Have a look in yellow pages or your local phone directory. Do you have a BMW breaker or independant specialist near you? I'm thinking in terms of finding out if the steering rack is the same as on another model which may make the search for a replacement easier. Anyone on here know?
We all have a photographic memory, just some don't take the lens cap off!
I've wondered about the repeaters and tend to think the first tester is probably right. I think any car built for the UK at the time of the Z1's production run would have had the repeaters and I'm surprised that just because it was built for the EU would allow it to get away without them when the car is tested in the UK.
That said, my car hasn't got them and it's been in the UK since 1990.
That said, have a look at http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_150.htm in the heading "Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986".

Unfortunately he wasnt very specific, rocked the wheel from side to side, it moved about a centimetre and he said it was faulty.AndyBass wrote:On the steering rack, it depends what is wrong with it. Is it excessive play, damaged gaiters, leaking power steering fluid or something else.

Strreing Rack / Side Repeaters
If you feel the need to fit the original side repeaters that were fitted to UK (and some other countries) supplied cars I believe you will find that they are the same as those on the E30 model.
There are some on eBay at present but only with clear or black lenses and not the original orange.
If you need measurements from front wing for position I can measure my car for you which was UK supplied.
Good luck.

I was extremely peeved to discover (after I'd had the damn things fitted) that they weren't needed.
Ciao,

do you actually like driving at all or are cars to you just a manifestation of some sort of pathological mother complex ?
