Electric Mirrors

Post by G.Holloway »

Seasons Greetings,

Cant figure out what is causing the fuse to blow for my electric mirrors.

Check rating, Replace fuse, test mirrors okay.
Start engine, fuse pops, mirror stops.
I guess i could start with the common denominator which is the switch....

Any ideas?

Thank you

I was wondering if the mirrors are heated? Is it only the movement of one mirror that causes the fuse to blow? If they are heated is it worth disconecting the heating element wiring on both and see if the mirrors move ok. If so then add one mirror heting element and see if the fuse blows? Its a thought. I have had exactly the same problem with my fuse blowing every time I try to move the mirrors via the switch.

The BMW dealer spent half and hour trying to find the cause but to no avail.

I've just lived with it for the last 4 years!

Let me know if you find the answer!

Cheers

My mirror switch did not work properly. I took it apart and found it had been shorting out. I got a new one from local BMW dealer no problem. the part is common to quite a few BMW models. I think you are right to check out the switch first.

Chris is right,

The mirror switch can get damaged by pushing items in to the space below it. The button gets forced up into the switch and eventually it breaks internally, causing a short.

Morning all,

Is the Mirror switch shared with any other model?

Edited to say - I remember that when I replaced mine, I had to trim some excess material off the bit of circuit board that sticks out sideways at the back of the new switch. (It was 5 years ago - so they might be different now)

Yep, that's the one.

I think it fits into the door card on the E30.

Actually I have had a new roof fitted recently, not sure how water would get to that switch though, considering where it is located.

I would also vote for the switch being the culprit.

That pic looks like a switch from an E30, but I have a feeling it's more a rectangular shape on the Z1. Isn't that the E28 switch, like this one:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=51&fg=10

If so, the part number is in the table at the foot of the page. (61311363459).

Does this make sense?

Sam Lever.

Felix, you know your way around realoem better that I do!
Still, I thought I recognised the switch from my Dad's old car, and I was right.....
Plenty of those around in breakers' yards.
Either that or you could "carelessly" get out of a mini-cab and walk away with one.....
Te he.

Are you implying I don't have a life?! :)

If you find the part number for a part for one car go to http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do to find out what other cars share that part. Mind you it's not perfect; I have found some errors.

Realoem knows the Z1 perfectly well; either use your chassis number (ALnnnnn) or chose "archive" at the initial search menu.

Felix - you have a Z1 - you MUST have a life - 'nuff said mate.
With 3 old BMW's I am fairly familiar with realoem, but that is a neat trick.

Damn!
You are right folks it's not the E30 - sorry about that.
Sam's excellent picture also shows the extension to the circuit board which I trimmed off for easy fitting.

I went to the pain of loading my old ETK onto this computer to look it up. Gave the number that Sam has posted, but the picture from the E30! (ie the right number / wrong picture)

Anyway; Mr G. Holloway, you now know.

how did you guys find the link for cross referencing what parts the car came on?

Is it accessible from the home page of Realoem?

On the "Select Your BMW Model page", click the "Search by Part #" link at the bottom - this links to the page mentioned above. There is some more info in my knowledge base article. It was targetted mainly for the Z3, but I did write it for any BMW, Z1 included.
