Diary of an idiot!

Post by G.Holloway »

I just got my Zzz outta the garage on xmas day for a quick topless drive, to stop myself eating any more food and committed the stupidest act of thoughlessness known to mankind.

I was in the middle of a very excited conversion process of doors down and roof down. Without thinking I yanked back the rear section of the hood, heard this sickening loud crack and split the rear plastic screen in half!

It just did not occur to me that anything left in the cold for a long period of time must be handled with care......

If anyone has any information on a cost effective option for replacing the hood whether in the UK or otherwise will be appreciated?

Any information you can provide will be appreciated.

Many Thanx and Happy new year to you all.

Depends where you live, i had a price of £150 supplied and fitted from a company called Soft Tops based in south london, and £464 from the dealers.

G.Holloway,

The price quoted was for the plastic screen only.

If it is only the plastic window you may find it zips in to the hood, ( mine does) and they should be available from your sdealer although I dont have any idea of price. It may be more economical than a new hood.
Unless the hood is worn or damaged as well. Sorry to here though.

If only it was that simple on the Z1, Unfortunately the entire skin will have to be removed, window stitched in and then replaced.

Funny enough I have thought about the advantage of having a Zipped window installed, not sure what the Cons are, but I guess im gonna find out sooner than I planned.

I am always looking out for bits, and how much they go for etc etc. I keep seeing this on German eBay. My German is somewhere between poor and ridiculous, but I think this might be a complete hood, new, and from a firm that lists similar for other cabrios on it's eBay shop.

http://cgi.ebay.de/CABRIO-VERDECK-BMW-Z ... dZViewItem

It might be worth a look, as 499 Euros is a lot more like it......

I'd love to know if they are any good.

That's €499 just for the hood without installation. Installation is quoted as "from €450" and duration is said to take up to 2 days. I assume any seals that are replaced are additional.

Thanks for the tip, took the liberty of contacting them. The hood is a copy of the original, manufactured by themselves, and can be provided in other colours, material is descibed as "sun country" (Sonnenland??), and maintenance/cleaning is the same as normal apparently.

Price €600 (same as UK prices?)
Seal €150 (windscreen only)
post: €32
colours option €30.00 (Green, blue, red, beige)
2 year guarantee.

:? The buy-it-now price is €499 so why you were quoted €600 is puzzling.

Ordered, received and its a quality item. All hand stitched, very impressive. Came rolled up in a surprisingly small box though. Seals are extra.

Had my wheels renovated in the meantime also, and what a difference, they look absolutely stunning...just like new. If your wheels are kerbed and beyond the reach of Autoglym magic wand, Its the way to go, just dont go cheap, whatever you do.

G.
Did you fit it yourself?????
When you say roled up in a small box, it sounds as if it was literally just the canvass and the window - not the frame. Is that right?
Was fitting a real bitch, or did you get someone else to do it?
Sorry for the Spanish Inquisition.......

Hello,

No Chance! its not something I would attempt to be honest, as it involves peeling the original and stretching the new canvas over the old frame, and if you were to fit it wrong, the only warning you get is when it rains!

Better left to the experts. T

Yes, it is just the canvas rolled into a tight ball, thats all you need, fitted by my local fitters.

...........And thank you for the Tip.
