Long trip successfully concluded!

Post by Racing Tortoise »

Very pleased with my Z1 - it has proved itself a faithful and trusty companion. My sister and I drove it down to the French Riviera for Christmas with our parents and then drove back yesterday!

All in we did approx 3000 kms, including nearly 1400 kms yesterday at a steady 140-160kph and the brave little beast didn't miss a beat, even when faced with the full horror of the M20/M2 late last night in heavy lying snow. It was even pretty economical. It's now sitting in my office carpark looking white with salt and grime so shall have to go and have it comprehensively washed (taking much solace from that "rustproofed for eternity" slogan at the moment!).

Biggest surprise was definitely how comfortable the seats are - it's roughly an 11hr drive straight from Calais to Monaco if you don't stop other than for petrol and neither of us had any trace of backache or numb buttocks.

Perfect car for the Riviera - the weather was glorious (crisp clear air with warm sunshine) so we drove around the Corniche with the doors down and with the exhaust echoing off the cliff-faces, staring out over the bluest sea through air so clear you could see Corsica in the distance (usually far too hazy).

So ignore all this nonsense about how fragile Z1s are and go for a roadtrip - they're great!

Sounds like an awesome trip. Glad you enjoyed it. Great to hear the Z1 performed so well too. :P

Cheers! It's amazing how much you can actually fit in too! Even with the hardtop on (and therefore the soft-top eating up most of the bootspace not already occupied by the spare wheel) we fitted in 10 days' luggage for two, plus on the way back a spare JVC midi-system with speakers that my parents no longer wanted, six bottles of plonk, and assorted collected Christmas presents and French produce.

Next time one of you guys drives down to the French Riviera, feel free to post here.

I live in Nice and another member of the french Z1 club was also in Monaco during this period.

Fairly sure I did mention it in passing but to be honest it didn't occur to me there would be members down MC way. Apologies! I'll know for next time.

Well if any of you saw a green English-reg'd Z1 parked at the side of the Corniche just below the vieux village in Roquebrune-Cap Martin that was me.

I'm planning to take mine to Le Mans next year, possible for both Classic and 24Hrs events. Fabulous car for the job.
For the 24Hrs, I am even planning to take my bike down. After getting 3 adult sized bikes into the boot of my E30 M3, one into a Zed should be childsplay! (with any luck).
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

Hi Sam,

Just picking up on your mention of the E30 M3. I love these cars. What model do you have?
