Just bought Z3 2.8, unsure about OBC?

Post by Cupsand »

Yesterday I bought a 2000 Z3 2.8, which I am very happy with.

Unfortunatly it came with no user manual :(

I assume an on board computer is standard on this model, but am unsure how to operate it.

Does the display come up next to the milage indicator, if so mine isnt working?

The radio had to have the code put in, indicating that the battery had been disconected at some point, would this be linked to the lack of display?

Can anyone give me some advice on any/all of the above?

Many thanks.

Press the indicator stalk in to operate the OBC and change the display and hold it in for 3 seconds to re-set the display you have.

It is standard, push end of indicator stalk as mentioned. Keep an eye out on ebay for manuals. You can sometimes pick them up there cheap.

Hi Cupsand , before I got my zed last year I did a google search for hand books and found a downloadable version. Removing the battery did not affect the OBC on my facelift '99 2.8 , I just needed to recode the radio.
Enjoy the Zed and post some shiney pics....Muppet like shiney things.
My OBC is on the central console below the heater controls, see pic it is showing the clock in this one

Thanks for all your replies guys.

Just to clarify - the OBC display is shown on the dial below the heat, fan controls (as in muppets pic)?

If this is the case then i'm in trouble, as I have no display here at all, just blank, not even a clock display!

Tried pushing the stalk in for 3 seconds + but didnt change anything.

Sounds like I need a replacement, I bet their nice and cheap :?

Hi Cupsand, I bought my Z3 last week too. The battery also seemed to have been disconnected as the radio need the code and the clock needed setting etc. If the computer still does not work, try checking the fuses? I have no idea really but this is where I would start. With a bit of luck will only cost 20p.

The code on the card for my stereo didn't work!!! :head: Took the radio out to get the serial number off it. Phoned BMW and they told me the code to unlock it - they have all that info on their systems. Thought it was going to be hassle book only took a 2 min phone call. Sometime things work out ok. Good luck. Ed

Don't panic I may have a fix!

I had the same problem recently, following a flat battery and recharge. The OBC just seemed to stop working and I thought I would have to replace it. I tried one last ditch effort to try to get it to work. Try disconnecting the battery completely (remove the connection in the boot). I did this and then replaced the terminals after 10 seconds and hey presto the computer started working again. Make sure you definitely disconnect the terminals as initially I just removed the fuse and then replaced it which had no effect.

Bob, is the battery in the boot (I dont have a manual) and is the actual obc display on the centre console below the heater dial?

Thanks

P.s Apologies, doesn't seem like my photos uploaded, will try again.

The battery is in the boot, lift the boot floor mat to access it.

The OBC is under the heater controls, normally displaying a clock (accessed by pressing the clock symbol). The S/R also allows you to re-set the display by holding.

If you don't have an Owner's Manual, buy one - it is a mine of information, and well worth having to hand.

Sounds like you don't have an OBC then, it's not standard on any models AFAIK. Its in the centre console, usually a clock is there if you don't have one.

I have the circular unit in within which the display should be but its just blank.
I contacted BMW today who said they can run a diagnostic test to find out the problem, for a small fee of course
I'm disconecting the battery tomorrow morning to see if that works before I take it in, I'll let you know how I get on.

Just looked in fuse box of car to see if a blown fuse was causing my lack of OBC, but nothing indicates what fuse is for what function!
Anyone know which one it is?

Problem solved :squeeze:

Disconected the battery for about a minute, reconnected and low and behold OBC is now fully functional.

Thanks for everyones advice, much appreciated!

With regards to needing a manual, there is a trick to getting the downloadble version free. See this thread:
http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopi ... vin+manual

Basically it goes like this, find a Z3 on ebay and note down the VIN number. Then go to BMW US web site and enter the owner area using this VIN. Form here you could download the manual for the car.

I did this a few years ago and it worked, unfortunatly I can't find the manual any longer on my PC.

See, it does help to lurk around in the background for a few years....

PM me with your email address and I will be happy to forward a copy. It's for the 2000 Z3/MZ3 models.

The manual is only about a tenner from the dealer though.
