It's backlit by 2 bulbs, one for the top half of the characters, one for the bottom. It sounds like they've both blown.
You'll have to pull out the dash pod till it hits the steering wheel, then reach round and replace the 2 bulbs. Fiddly, but not impossible.

As a test, have a look at the back of the pod, swap a matching bulb temporarily and see if the odometer lights up.

If it doesn't then the numerical display is probably blown. You might have to replace the complete pod which with a BMW is a pain for lots of reasons.

I've not heard of this problem on Z3s before now, but it's quite common on E36 3-series.

You don't need to fiddle around behind the instrument cluster - just unfasten the three multi-pin connectors and remove the cluster - ther is just enough room between the back of the steering wheel and the front of the hood over the instruments.

Did you manage to fiw your problem then?? I seems to have the same! The mileage display came on and off a few times the last few weeks and no it just doesn't work!
Only the service lights are working when I turn the key on.

As an addendum to this, yes there are two bulbs, but one is for the mileage display and the other is for the service lights.

Pierrick, I answered your other post on the more recent thread.

Cheers R.
