Thinking about repainting...

Post by Rob Tan »

The Z3 I bought on October has stone chips and I looked into getting those 'touched up' but there are so many. I can get the bonnet and front bumper repainted for NZ$750. Then I asked about getting the whole car repainted and I think he said between NZ$3500 and $4000.... so I am now in a quandary...

Part of me says: "Nah, just get a good cut and polish and have Paint Protective Film put on the car."

Then the other part of me says: "It will never be cheaper to repaint the entire car than it is right now. Then have the Paint Protective Film put on the car to protect that paint job."

My question is: What would YOU do?

The job turned out nicer than factory, and now 3-1/2 years later, is holding up better than the original paint. No regrets.

Got the quote for the Paint Protective Film and it is NZ$1766 to do part of the bonnet and half way up the doors and side panel (I want the Film to reach where I plan to put the protective strip), and both bumpers (although I think it is only the top of the back bumper?).

I had asked for a quote to do the full car -- bonnet, all of the doors, all the side panels, and the bumpers -- but he did not give me a price and they are closed until 11th Jan.

Had wanted to have the car painted AND THEN have the paintwork protected ... but the price to do all of the paintwork is much higher than I thought it would be.

Robyn (who started this thread) is my Mother.

Her car is on holiday undergoing some beauty therapy. This is no facial peel, it's a full scrub and tan.

Here are some travel photos from last week:

Long story short, an insurance claim is covering a greater share of the cost.

Spraying the whole car means that we don't worry about issues surrounding blending and matching colours.

It's getting done in Glasurit paint.

These photos are from today.

You guys down under, in the ex-colonies, don't keep in touch with each other, bit of a shame really. Not using the ham radio's any more? :)
Now I get the "Long story short, an insurance claim is covering a greater share of the cost" bit.

Could some kind person with the tool to hold the pully let me know the center distance for the holes so I can premake one.

If Rob Tan is on line somewhere did you survive the shake that flattened Christchurch. My thoughts are with you Your poor Zed will not make it over the cracks in the roads

Yes, we survived the earthquake. Reports of the 'leveling' of Christchurch were MUCH exaggerated!!! Media focused on the worst hit and made it look like all of Christchurch suffered the same damage.

Still don't have the Z3 back....but we did tell the guys to take their time and do a great job!! She is going to look so sweet!!!

Robyn's car is definitely not going to be finshed for Christmas, taking longer than she was told it would, but it has occured to us they might have been able to lower the quote by bumping the job down the list of priorities. Not to worry.

I went to visit the car today and must have spent 20-30 minutes scrutinising the job progress. The car had not been sanded or buffed yet so there was a fair bit of orange peel (but in parts looked the same as the previous paint job - wonder if they even buffed it then?!). Few dust nibs and a clear run, they've also forgotten to mask the door lock barrel for some reason, a little bit of overspray on some rubber seals and I noted thin basecoat on the edge of one of the gills and asked them to repaint that.

It's going to look very nice when it's finished, though today it didn't seem as purple as the old paint, with a bit more green (someone mixing a touchup stick for us a while ago noted there were 8 colours in it!). Perhaps the colour will settle in time, our Honda for example is certainly not as purple-blue as it was when brand new, and more green-blue. Or, perhaps the old paint was a slightly incorrect colour!

Car is also covered in dust and my camera is never completely colour accurate either.

Next entry, the job might just be finished!

When Andy showed me the pics he took yesterday, all I could say was: Oh my God, she's BEAUTIFUL!!!!

I thought the car WAS Montreal Blue before the repaint...but perhaps not?

Hey, Merry Christmas everyone!

Bump

Looks good!

There's a small list of issues to sort out, but it's mostly done. Questionable level of basecoat in a couple of areas, which will be seen to. Easy to miss when you're painting the whole body at once, I suppose.

The painters said the car spent more than an hour in the oven, usually they allow around 40 minutes.

Brand new side/rear BMW badges are on standby, ready to be installed upon completion of the job.

Car still needs to be polished, when the paint hardens up, the paint shop plans to do it in three stages with the rotary, we're hoping they don't inflict any holograms.

The car is turning into a garage queen.
