Strange thing happened on the way home from work today.
Accelerated my Z3 (2.8) away fairly hard from a roundabout on to clear straight road. Somewhere, I think, during 2nd gear there was a massive bang from under the car, and the revs immediately went very high.
Put the clutch in immediately and coasted to a stop.
Took a look around, nothing obviously wrong. Gingerly let the clutch out and moved off, seems fine. Slowly built up more confidence in it again, and it's driving completely normally.
Nothing on the road behind me at all, so it's not something I hit or anything like that. Didn't sound like any kind of backfiring either.
Any ideas what the heck this was? Slipped out of gear? Suspension spring snapping (but then why the high revs)? Gearbox/diff issue?
Very loud bang - puzzled
You broke the Sound Barrier
Have a good look at your suspension springs, they can break in places you cant see or notice. I had a broken spring 3 months ago, and only noticed when I changed the brake pads.
Check under car for any oil leaks, especially around your back axle areas.
Hope it comes to nothing, but I'd give it a jack up and take each wheel off in turn for a thorough inspection.

Sounds like it jumped out of gear.
