Flywheel and clutch on 1997 2.8

Post by msassoon »

I have a problem that I guess is the dual mass flywheel. As I lift the clutch pedal, there is a rattling noise like the lifters are gonna blow! It only happens in first and second and below 2000RPM, so guess that the clutch and/or flywheel is misbehaving. Has anyone fitted a single mass flywheel or lightened flywheel, and if so, where did you get it from? There are some on ebay, but want a more reputable supplier.

Cheers

I think PHB10186 had one for sale in the stock exchange a while back. Might be worth a look.

Are you sure the rattling is the flywheel?

Sounds more like the release bearing, i spent 9 hours yesterday dropping the gearbox for a similar noise along with juddering.

Release bearing is totally shot but flywheel seems okay, i'm borrowing a flywheel checking tool tomorrow to check if the free play is still within spec.

I'm going to whack a new clutch in while i've got it apart.

Taken from the LUK (who make BMW clutches and flywheels) website:

3. With the flywheel still fitted...

Rotate the inner mass by hand anticlockwise and mark the flywheel then rotate it clockwise and measure the travel. REPLACE if the movement is:

- Less than15mm or

- More than 30mm

4. Check the bearing play...

Rock the inner mass from side to side. REPLACE if movement is:

- More than 2mm for passenge

- More than 4mm for light side to side

Inner mass is the half closest to the gearbox.
