Should I take part exchange offer?

Post by east end tree »

Hello all

Very sadly, I'm having to trade my Z3 in for something more practical, as my wife's having our first child in about 7 weeks time (yikes!)...

It's a 2.0, V reg, with 47k on the clock - very good condition and with an iPod stereo thrown in too. I've been offered £4,150 PX and my first thought is to hold out for a sale and, hopefully, a fair bit more (i've advertised it on Autotrader at £6100).

But part of me has a nagging doubt that maybe I should take the offer...

I was just wondering what people on here reckon - is it still easy to sell Zeds? Are they going for a decent price?

Sorry for the agony aunt style question, but it's a bit of a dilemma!! Any thoughts/advice appreciated!

Without seeing the car i would say DO NOT take the part ex.

your price on autotrader and the price you have been offered px are poles apart. Bring them closer and you will sell maybe £5300

good luck

In my experience unless you trading in for a new/nearly new car you will never get full value trade in (even with new its just a playing with numbers game anyway).

So its a matter of putting value on hassle of selling private against ease of trade in.

As stated above you expectation is high IMHO especially if you want a reasonably quick sale.

Mileage is low and if in good condition a good advert at a reasonable price should generate plenty of interest. I would consider putting it on a eBay 2 or 3 day auction with a starting price at your trade in value and you have nothing to loose. If you do sell it for more your quids in and should be able to barter a little off the car your buying for cash sale.

I would even discuss this with the saleman in advance if it suits you ie commit to the purchase but confirm you want to complete in 7 days (you can leave a small deposit) but have 2 deals on the table, one for trade in and one for cash (believe me he will prefer the cash option). Stick it on eBay and at least then you'll know you've done the best deal.

Thats how I would look at it anyway :D

ps I'd be tempted to say stick it on eBay and pistonheads but in my experience most people looking will look on both anyway and eBay can portray better the timescales (Pistonheads has no end date  ) so I would just stick on eBay.

pps an advert on here is free :D but you need some good pics

I'd go with pistonheads personally, I advertised my old car on both and sold it through pistonheads. All I got through e bay were silly cash offers or would I swap it for 1.3 escort cosworth lookalike

My buyer came up from portsmouth for the car and put a deposit down before even driving it.

Feel free to call me if its something of interest.

Many Thanks,

Thanks all - good advice. I think I'm pricing it a bit too high - Chris, give me a shout if you want to know anything more about the car and more than happy to meet up at the weekend if you'd like a look at her.

I'd think somewhere in the middle between what you are asking, and what you've been offered would be a more likely realizable price given age/mileage for a private sale. I don't think it's an unfair P/Ex price to be honest, but you could do better privately - but that's always the way.
