Bad day for me and the z

Post by eame64 »

This is the result of a 10mph rear shunt into a merc 450ml.The day started so well to. After turning at a junction he slammed on his brakes because he said a car was heading straight for him and guess who was right behind him ,he admitted it was his fault but we all know that means nothing in a rear end shunt. The car still drove fine but was no fun driving the 30 miles home {roof back up of course}most drivers nearly breaking there necks to get a good look.
Insurance picking up on tuesday to acess.Wandering if its the last time i will see it as my neighbour who owns a garage reckons even though the damage is not that bad the price of all parts/paint/labour will push it above what the insurance will allow against the value of the car.Well if it does come to that i will just have to get another one.
Any way main thing is no one was hurt{apart from my car}the merc only had a very small dent.one of them days you wish you had stayed in bed.

If they value it as non repairable then they are mad. I'm sure that you could get a third party to sort it out. Source the spares and get it fixed.

Feel for you eame  if its any consolation looking at the pics the damage doesn't look to be too serious and looks like it will be fully repairable :)

One of my golden rules is never to follow someone close enough that you can't stop in time no matter how hard they brake. Sometimes this brings problems in itself when someone sees the gap in front of me and tries to push in. Theyre are many w**kers on our roads!!

Best of luck in getting your poorly zed fixed.

Really sorry to hear and see this. I went through something similar a couple of years ago - probably even slower speed impact than yours - but same problem - the bumper of the other car rode over the zed's and damaged the nose of the bonnet. I don't know how close it was to being written off, as a new bonnet wouldn't be cheap, but my insurance did pay out.

Do you know what damage has been done to the slam plate and the area behind the headlamps? Looks like there is a little bit as one of the headlamps is out of line.

Nose to rear impact may well go down as a fault claim, simply because you are supposed to be able to cope with the driver in front doing an emergency stop. Only exceptions I think would be a car reversing into you or performing an illegal manoeuvre.

Anyway, I hope you get it fixed soon and then you can forget all about it.

Thanks to everyone for the nice and supportive comments, just opened the garage and B****R it really did happen.
Well just have to wait and see what the insurance decides
About damage behind ,hard to tell because bonnet won,t open you can see that rad is bent as well as air con pipe, nothing is leaking though, lights are both broke from housings.

Gutted for you.

From my own recent experience I'd have to say it's probably a write off, at least in the insurance comanies view anyway. That bonnet is a £2k bit of metal, without paint and I can't imagine the headlights are cheap..!

Obviously you could fix it up yourself a lot cheaper with second hand parts. Best of luck.

Blimey didn,t think the bonnet would be that much, well even though i really enjoy the car i haven,t had it long enough to get to attached to it .
So me and the mrs said if they write it off we will just get another one.
As gutted as i am we all know that theres a lot more important things in life than a dented bit of metal,

So why does BMWFans have it listed at 665 euros? I didn't think the exchange rate was THAT bad! Their prices are generally about the mark, so I don't see it being anything like £2k! :?

A new bonnet should not result in a write-off - it certainly didn't in my case - however my fear is for hidden damage underneath to the slam plate and rad, which may tip it over the edge, hence my question earlier.

Well that's what I was told by the assesor who looked at mine. realOEM.com says it's over $1200:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=41&fg=35

Either way, it's a good chunk of money, probably one of the most expensive individual parts to replace on the Z3.

I did this to mine (same sorta story as yours)

and it was repaired on insurance, repair was just shy of £3500, insurance valued it at £4500 so did the work.

Mine needed 2 new headlights, grill, bonnet, slam pannel, bonnet fittings and some other small bits

That's a piece of cake of a repair - looks to have gone above the bumper.

Similar to the damage I repaired on mine - all bolt on stuff (except the front panel which has a couple of spot welds to drill out - doesn't need spot welding back on - it bolts on)

If you can repair yourself or know someone who can (ask around - speak to a local bodyshop and tell them its not an insurance job) and the insurance intimate they are going to write it off - ask for a price for salvage rights on the vehicle (normally 10% of the PAV - pre accident value - hopefully you still have the vehicle otherwise you may be liable for any storage incurred) - e.g they value it at £4000 - you settle for £3600 and keep the car.

Remember to you its a 'pride and joy' to the insurance company its another pile of junk to be disposed of with all the costs involved - transport, storage, various other fees etc - they need to minimise their loss.

So potentially even using new some parts and avoiding top whack body shops you should have it repaired for about 2K and have £1600 in you back pocket, be patient and use 2nd hand parts and or repair yourself and the wad in the back pocket increases sizeably!.

The bonnet and front panel are the most difficult items to find second hand - if buying new the bonnet is about £800 and the front panel £300 - ask your BMW dealer for discount and delivery (that bonnet is big!)

Insist/argue with the assesor to categorise as a Cat D (can't see there being much argument given the damage) - if you you talk to him/her nicely it might not even be recorded as a loss by the insurance company - no harm in trying

Or just buy the salvage - bung it on ebay and depending on what you paid for salvage double or treble your money

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions regarding the process

My grandad got away with slamming into the back of someone else's car (i.e. claim went on the other driver's insurance) as the other driver stated it was his fault entirely. Relies on the other driver being VERY honest, but it does happen

Oh man, I feel your pain. My daughter rear ended twice with the same car in the space of a year. VW Polo, but all damage was just like yours. I used a metal cutter to get the parts off and replaced them all with 2nd hand parts, and even did the spray jobs in the driveway.
My wife's car had a side shunt, very little damage, but got it written off. I reckon that is repairable.

It's not so much how much it's worth, but how much it costs to replace. If the insurance company cover it, buy another one. But I think you love it too much to let it go, and that interior looks quite nice.

Best of luck, I hope either way you get back on the road with a zed real soon.

Great news :)

Sounds like you have a good insurer, willing to take into consideration the type of vehicle, condition and owner's wishes rather than simply quoting from the book of 'costs'.

Out of interest was your insurance a 'big name' or sourced via a specialist insurer/broker?

So glad to see that you got your car sorted.
I do not believe there are more than half a dozen 'Orinoco' limited edition cars in the 2.8 version in the Country.
Incidentally I know about Mercedes being strong.
My previous toy was a 300ce I owned it 6 weeks and a boy racer decided not to stop on a mini roundabout and t boned me. His XR3 was totally wrecked.
My suspension was damaged and there was a slight dent in the rear wheelarch lip which was panel beaten.
Unfortunately the suspension damage cost over £4,500 to fix, but it was designed to absorb the impact and prevent the shell from twisting.
That car was 10 years old with only 10,00 dry miles .
Fortunately like you it was repaired.
This Orinoco doesn't Womble.
