Where to go from here...

Post by yalden »

As many of you will know, I've been toying with the idea of selling my Z3.

I had a few scandelous emails, some unreasonable offers and a few interesting, but by no means tempting part-ex offers.

The biggest hinderance lies in the fact that each time I step out of my car I can't help but glance back at it and in doing so I struggle to see what I could possibly get within the same price range that could ever look so good.

I decided that perhaps I should take it a little further as there's always things to do!

So I ask, given my car - what would you do?

I'm genuinely seeking inspiration so I'm open to all suggestions 8-)

My current list can be seen below!

Cheers,

Chris

No longer a stricly to-do list, more so a list of considerations:-

- Z3M rear view mirror / Alternative mirror (map lights)
- Re-leather steering wheel / Alternative wheel (Raid etc)
- New EP3 Type R Aerial
- Repair chip in windscreen
- Upgrade coilovers
- Fit polybushes
- Finish sub-enclosure project
- Clear 3rd brake light
- Wrap steering wheel tabs in C/F (subject to wheel)
- Wrap wing mirror blank in C/F
- Hamann Hardtop
- Hamann fog light air ducts
- 2.8 conversion

How about just keeping it and enjoying it? or trade in for a Z3m.

One day I may trade in for an M but I still prefer the looks of mine. Shame BMW never did a Z3m facelift :x

Pretty hard to comment on your masterpiece :bow
But.......I'm not fond of the OEM fog lights & your yellow lamination.
I prefer the "halo"/ fog light combo- albeit a bit ghetto.

- Z3M rear view mirror (no fit a smaller one with integrated downlights)
- Re-leather steering wheel (fit a 340mm Raid Daytona Carbon)
- New EP3 Type R Aerial (need pic)
- Repair chip in windscreen (you not done that yet  )
- Upgrade coilovers (your choice, balance ride/handling/stance)
- Fit polybushes (mixed reviews)
- Finish sub-enclosure project (I thought you had :?: )
- Clear 3rd brake light (yep)
- Wrap steering wheel tabs in C/F (not needed with Daytona)
- Wrap wing mirror blank in C/F (will it fit after?)
- Hamann Hardtop (no they look aweful (but will look ok on mine )

I looked into this but it's a bit of a ballache in comparison to the straight forward 2.8 (twin-vanos)... which after derestricting would produce very similar power.

I could never give it all up to own a stock Z3m... as much as I love them I'd feel I'd have to do it all again as I prefer the Aero skirts, carbon accessories, strongstrutt brace etc...

I enjoy my car as it is, but half the fun for me is having something to work on!

S/C'ing comes across as a ridiculously expensive upgrade, which is a shame! I'm sure I could opt for the aforementioned 2.8 conversion and receive similar gains for a fraction of the price. As for more cylinders, I enquired as to the fitment of a 4.4 V8 and was told to come back when I had £10k, and supposedly that was just to get started

I'm not a massive fan of the halo fogs, although I have considered numerous times fitting CCFL angel eyes into my stock headlight units. I used to have such a setup on my E36 and loved the look, whilst it soon became far too common on E36's I still see it as a fairly individual look on the Z3's! I have also considered binning my fogs in favour of some Hamann ducts, I should get a price really...
Jonttt wrote:- Z3M rear view mirror (no fit a smaller one with integrated downlights) BMW or aftermarket? Any info?
- Re-leather steering wheel (fit a 340mm Raid Daytona Carbon) I've been tempted but didn't want to loser the tan/yellowy leather on my wheel
- New EP3 Type R Aerial (need pic) Already fitted but damanged, hence need replacement
- Repair chip in windscreen (you not done that yet  ) went to get it sorted wayyy back but old policy didn't offer cover, new policy does so just buying some time before I call them up
- Upgrade coilovers (your choice, balance ride/handling/stance)
- Fit polybushes (mixed reviews) mostly due to accelerated bush wear when running as low as I do, I figured polybushes might last longer?
- Finish sub-enclosure project (I thought you had :?: ) It was never sealed and therefore doesn't operate to full potential
- Clear 3rd brake light (yep)
- Wrap steering wheel tabs in C/F (not needed with Daytona)
- Wrap wing mirror blank in C/F (will it fit after?)Yeah, they'd be trimmed accordingly
- Hamann Hardtop (no they look aweful (but will look ok on mine ) lol

You can fit smaller mirrors with an adaptor.

Only real problem is relocating the alarm receiver unit (if fitted in the OEM mirror housing)

This should give you something to do, someone with your skills can show others how it should be done :D

Keep this one as it is, and start on a second one in a different colour.

Just my thoughts:
yalden wrote:No longer a stricly to-do list, more so a list of considerations:-

- Z3M rear view mirror / Alternative mirror (map lights) Yes. Try an alternative and inspire us all
- Re-leather steering wheel / Alternative wheel (Raid etc) Raid
- New EP3 Type R Aerial How about smoothing the wing completely and trying an aerial embedded elsewhere within the car? (hidden)
- Repair chip in windscreen Goes without saying
- Upgrade coilovers What's wrong with the ones you've got?
- Fit polybushes Yes
- Finish sub-enclosure project What's left to do?
- Clear 3rd brake light No, red is best
- Wrap steering wheel tabs in C/F (subject to wheel) No, get a Raid
- Wrap wing mirror blank in C/F Try it, might be too chav though :shrug
- Hamann Hardtop Yes, yes, yes!
- Hamann fog light air ducts Maybe, try photoshopping it first
- 2.8 conversion Not sure that this would add too much value although it would be a decent challenge for you
How about tinting the rear screen a little? I've seen it on a couple of zeds on bimmerforums and it looks good (and tinting always works well on black cars). You'd have to stitch the new plastic into the existing zipped frame but this is definitely doable (it's what the eBay guy based in Coventry does when he replaces a z3 rear screen for £120).

I'd also do the angel eye fit into standard headlights. Not everyone's cup of tea but I think they look great on the z3 and there aren't too many like this (I'm currently playing about with a spare set of headlights at the moment so you can wait and see how I get on if you like).

Don't sell the car - I sense that you'd regret it.

If a supercharger is to pricey why not go for a turbo conversion

and £10k for a v8 conversion seems a bit pricey to me, you can pick up bmw V8's for under a grand. I bet if you look around somebody would do it for circa £5k

Yee gods that would be a good thing.
