Spare wheel
Spare wheel
I decided that I would take advantage of the nice sunny weather and daylight to remove the spare wheel on the Zed. Thinking I'd better give it a go now rather than on a wet night, a flat tyre, a passenger and luggage in the boot.
So I followed the directions in the boot and removed the wheel without drama. Both the wheel and tyre were in good condition, though the wheel did have a number of non paying passengers - mainly daffodil bulbs, snail shells and some items of grunge.
Putting the wheel back did take longer than getting it out and along the way I discovered that without correct placement in the carry rack, no amount of weight lifting will get it to lock back in place.
Clever design, but give me a full size spare (like in our E39's) any day or night. All in all, I'd hate to be doing this on a wet night, especially if I had a bad back.

I've got a couple of cans in the boot, but reading the local reviews indicates roughly a 50% success rate. There is also a bit of debate on whether the stuff wrecks your tyres, so I'd rather not take the chance unless I have to.
Hopefully I'll never need either the cans or the spare, but if I get a flat on a nice day with no passenger, I'll try the spare first.

Ultraseal is put into the tyre to stop the tyre deflating, not to inflate and seal the tyre after a puncture. Here's their website.

how do you know when you have a puncture with ultraseal ??
painful if you have to persistantly check all tyres all the time for nails etc on every journey
i removed my spare as its not a good design and there is nowhere for the wheel you remove off the car to go
just got the bmw mobility kit now, its very good at sealing punctures, but it does wreck the tyre which is the downside

I bought the BMW mobility kit as was thinking of getting rid of the runflats on the 1 series then changed my mind so now it sits in the Zeds boot now as no way I will get 18" alloy in the boot witbout a struggle. Have you tried the air compressor as it wouldn't power on when I plugged it into the Zeds lighter socket, it didn't fit great so wasn't drawing power. I'm going to look at an adapter and see if that works. I've also got a halfords compressor and that wont fit the Zeds lighter socket either

I was going to switch the Z4 from the runflats to normal tyres and contacted Ultraseal only to find out that it wasn't suitable for the tyre sizes on the Z4. The information from Ultraseal was that it cannot be used in tyres with an aspect ratio less than 45 and the Z4 is 225x40 front and 265x35 rear so they wouldn't install it. Apparently the lower profile tyres have internal transverse ribs that stop the Ultraseal distributing itself evenly over the inside surface. So just had to cough up £386 for two new runflats on the rear They only lasted 22k - nothing to do with the way I drive itFrank.A wrote:Ultraseal is put into the tyre to stop the tyre deflating, not to inflate and seal the tyre after a puncture. Here's their website.

the compressor only works once connected to the tyre valve as well, i had the same issue, went back to the dealers and he gave me the sp !!

Just out of interest, is any one using pure nitrogen in their tires instead of the normal mixture?
I have been thinking about doing this, but don't know anybody that has tried it.
I have read up on it, and its supposed to be more stable at different temperatures, amongst other things.

Great cheers Mark, will give it another go I thought it strange it wouldn't work on both cars that it was made for, I didn't twigmarkrnorton wrote:TimTitanTim wrote:Hi Mark, markrnorton wrote:how do you know when you have a puncture with ultraseal ??

My other half is, he runs a 3.2 Quattro TT with low profile tyres and does a lot of mileage. He's ready for a new set of tyres and despite going into the garage that fitted them a number of times since fitting they have never needed any adjustment. He's about to get a full new set fitted and will be getting nitrogen again.Hard Top wrote:Just out of interest, is any one using pure nitrogen in their tires instead of the normal mixture?

I don't drive his car enough to say I can feel a difference but having more stability in the tyre pressure has to be a good thing.

Thanks snoops, I think that I will give it a try then.

Nitrogen! Does any petrol station have that? my local Tesco only has air! but I must admit I havent tried the Asda superstore yet, they might have some. I cnt imagine they have it at Aldi though, but you never know.

We have a petrol station up the road that has it, but you have to pay for it.
I can understand why snoops OH does it when he gets new tyres, as you otherwise have to 'clean' them, i.e. let the air out and fill with nitrogen, empty and refill several times (so I have read)
And this is not without a price tag.

Can't say that I've ever seen it at a petrol station but the tyres were fitted at Kwik Fit Wigan and when fitted they said, come back any time for tyre pressure checks, which we have. Always FOC and always just squeeze us in between customers. Obviously having good friendly service means we will go back for new tyres so they're probably happy to cover cost of Nitrogen for repeat custom.Jamezee wrote:Nitrogen! To be honest I'd rather get my tyre pressures checked properly I've had so much variation with petrol station machines and it makes such a difference if they're "out".
