Short aerial
Short aerial
Just a quick heads up for you guys, I had a Citroen C2 aerial lying around spare from an old car (was fitted to my Clio 197 cup) and just tried it on the Z3 and it fits perfectly, and good reception to, well on my drive at least. Was about £5 iirc, part number is 6561N3.
This is a picture of it on the clio, its too dark to get one of it on the Z3 at the moment, but the fit is flush on the Zed.

Pardon the personal question, but how long is it?

What do people think of this?

Always find my aerial is in the way when putting the cover over the car.

I'm undecided on the whole aerial thing to be honest. I think I'd like to keep mine, but the base is looking very old and worn at this stage..
I like the long aerial actually so I'm not so sure about the short stubby ones. This is why I thought if it dissapeared completely being electric might be another option

I am not against the electric retractable type, but you get what you pay for, the one you have shown is inferior, will last 6 months if your lucky.
I would suggest looking at something of a better quality. and of course if you have enough room to fit it..As the electric roof pump (If you have one) will be in the way.
TBH I would change the complete old fitting before going down this route.

You are kidding, right? They looked crap in the 80's when they were a new idea!Wolverine_1999 wrote:What do people think of this?
Would be far tidier to put a clear aerial strip across the windscreen and have the hole filled in the rear panel.

Grommet is about £1 from dealer part number is 65218389698Wolverine_1999 wrote:Yes the Grommet is up for €8 delivered to Ireland.. so a more reasonable choice at present.
No electric roof so there would be plenty of space, but as you said, quality is of importance.
Any way to judge a good decent one? (besides price)
I bought the Citroen/Pug stubby last year for the 1er and it fits perfectly and snug onto the aerial base. The BMW stubby I bought last week doesn't and leaves a gap between the base and the aerial it fits fine on the Zed
To be honest I don't see anything wrong with an electric aerial at all, yes they look a bit iffy, the MK1 MR2 I owned had an electric aerial as standard and would lower as soon as the ignition was switched off. If you park in dodgy areas you would be thankful for one
Tim.

If you want, you can get it posted to me and I can post it onwards. Shouldn't be any aggro for something that size!OXO wrote:The seller won't post to france

Aerial
Ditto, looks great but the reception here is crud. Hey ho, back to the long one me thinks.
I've ordered an Autoleads Aerial booster off ebay (£3) as i am using an aftermarket headunit and aerial (last one broke and didn't want to pay £90 for OEM aerial unit )
The long aerial works a treat but looks pants, when i put the stubby on I lose a couple of stations like Magic - Need some Lionel Richie blarring out now and then, and the stubby aerial

BimBeema,
Be more than happy to take the citroen one of your hands if you want to get rid. I don't use the radio, so reception isn't an issue!
PM me know if you want to sell it on!

You could always sell it on eBay !!BimBeema wrote:Fitted the stubby aerial off the citroen and the reception is rubbish like others have also commented. OEM one is back on and search continues for a good short aerial. If anyone knows a good one, please let rest of us know.
At least at £5.99 it wasn't an expensive mistake.
Exactly, your more sensitive head units work better with less signal than the standard units in the Z3 do, but would still work better with more signal from a bigger aerial, to a point anyway.Frank.A wrote:The quality of reception is not just aerial dependent but will vary with the sensitivity of the front end of the head units that the aerial is connected to.
The Citroen aerial works fine with the Clarion head unit in my Zed and also works well with VW radio in Passat and OEM set up in Corsa C.
I bought a stubby similar to the 65 mm one, and fitted to my Z3. It came from the states but was not expensive, but being so short I was dubious about the reception. It was not too good, and I debated about refitting the original, but as I don't use it that often, just left it on. Anyway when the Z went in for a Heater bulb replacement the car came back with the radio playing very well. I reackon that somebody tweaked something at the back of the radio.

The latest price is £1.70 inc VAT for 65218389698.... But that is only half the story. The part number you quoted was for a pre 04/1999 vehicle. And I can assure you that it will not fit all. The number for the post 04/1999 Z3s is 65218411562.theduck wrote:Grommet is about £1 from dealer part number is 65218389698Wolverine_1999 wrote:Yes the Grommet is up for €8 delivered to Ireland.. so a more reasonable choice at present.

So to recap Z3s:
Pre 04/99: 6521 8 389 698
Post 04/99: 6521 8 411 562
The numbers quoted above are for the 1.9 Z3
Cheers
