Door lining

Any ideas what the lining behind the door panels is stuck to the door with? I've taken mine off to do some fixes, and can't get it to stay in place while I get the panels back on. It's a strange black rubbery substance, but I can't make it sticky by heating it up, and the door lining doesn't seem to adhere to silicon sealant.

I'm not sure what they're originally stuck with but I believe the term for it is "non curing sealant" or "mastic sealant". I've been looking for the same thing myself and this carafax stuff looks like a suitable substitute:
