Blower switch

Can anyone please help. The blower switch in my 97 1.9 z3 fuse keeps goin. I've noticed tho that the blower switch works on position No 4 only. Would it be that a new switch is gonna be needed or could it be something else.

Hi Muzz

There is a blower resistor which controls the speeds in positions 1, 2 & 3. The resistor is located in the passenger side centre console in behind the covers. The part is no 3 below: -

Pls check that this part number is for your car via real oem or contact a dealer.

Note: If the car has AC then the blower resistor is located in the fan unit, accessed via the panel under the wipers. If the car has no AC the blower resistor is located in the passenger footwell

Yes, You will have to remove the panel to get access to the resistor, the resistor simply pulls out of the housing and unplugs. Plug in the new resistor and put the panels back.

I have tried to look for some decent pics of the area but cannot find any yet.

The instruction listed is for cars with AC, these have the resistor in the blower itself, for cars with no AC the resistor is in the passenger footwell.

You might like to check that there are no shorts before you fit the new one - either the resistor pack failing is causing a short that blows the fuse, or there is a short that blew the resistor pack. You don't want to have to go out and buy another resistor pack if you blow the new one up on first use.

I checked the part number on the real oem and ordeded it came the next day.I stripped it down really easy only to find the part is the wrong one.On inspection of the the one I removed I found it to be a little corroded and one of the springs had become detached.So I've cleaned it all up and re-soldered it and now is working perfectley.Just need to send the new one back and get the right one sent out as you just dont how long the repair will last.

If you soldered it it will last forever - they had a sizing error on the crimping machine in production.

Had no luck with the soldering it lasted a few days a tbh I'm not the greatest solder

.After entering my chassiss No into real oem I ordered the new resistor only to find it's the wrong one. Finally got the right one then fitted it in only 25 mins

Now the problem is it's still blowing the 30 amp fuse, it's ok for a day then its another fuse any ideas

Sounds like the motor is drawing far too much current hence blowing the fuse and why the resistor packed up

Would it be a difficult job to replace the whole unit or can it be fixed. Would hate to think how much a brand new unit would be lol
