problems already???

Post by JohnBag »

Just got my z3 and have 2 problems already...
(2.0 6 cyl 99)

1) When sitting for a while idoling the engine seems to start running rough and slightly miss firing, sounding like its running on 3 or 4 cylinders. I think it may be a blocked fuel filter, when i turn the engine off (dropping fuel pressure) then start up agian its fine????

2) Air bag light stays on constantly?? comes on goes off when engine started then comes back on constantly.

any ideas people???

Just bought the z, hopefully this is not the start of lots of problems. are z's fairly reliable normally or what??

John

1) If fuel filter was blocked then I suspect would have most effect at higher revs when more fuel flow is req'd rather than tickover. Might be your spark plugs which you can check/replace. Most other causes would need dealers diagnostic system to locate.

2) Seat belt tensioner loom fault often cause of airbag light. It's a bit of a weakness in these so a common fault. Mine was £90 for the dealer to fix.

Hope that helps. These are normally pretty reliable cars.

Johnbag. I'd find a good independant specialist in the first instance, failing that a dealer. You need a diagnostic check of the computer to check for fault codes to cure the bad running. I'm guessing but from my recent experience with a similar problem it was caused by a camshaft position sensor, but it could be anything and I initially suspected fuel pressure. As for the airbag light it's likely to be a wiring loom fault for the seatbelt pretensioners or a seat belt pretensioner itself. The diagnostic check will tell which one it is and which seat. Sorry but it's not a cheap fix if you use a main dealer, budget for £200 for the seatbelt pretensioner, thats why I'd use a specialist if you can. BTW I believe the airbags are out of action when the light is lit. Good luck m8

I had my seat belt light come on 2 years ago when the car was under warranty, took it to the dealer and they said it was drivers seatbelt tensioner, they reset the computer and said if it comes on again the tensioner would need replacing  ......it's not come back on again yet :D .

Hey Johnbag, I got a 2.0 recently as well and had similar issues, the airbag light came on, but we got a 90 day govt warranty here so the dealer fixed that up, it was the seatbelt apparently, and happens to lots of ppl from what I hear.

Also was concerned about engines sounds and what not but dealer said there was nothing.

I think you just gotta see the z3 as like this hot smokin women, a lot of fun but she can be a little bit tempremental at times as well, but hey, you still love her:P

So no warranty John? still worth going back and asking for repairs. Sale and supply of goods act.
