Starting Problem

Post by Garethdeb »

Hi Folks
Can anyone shed light on a problem we have with our Zed at the mo? She starts ok from cold but when shut off won't start again for about half an hour. The starter motor turns and the solenoid engages for about half a second but not long enough to fire the engine but the starter motor keeps spinning if you hold the ignition key on.
Is this a starter motor/solenoid problem or is there possibly a fault somewhere with the immobiliser? She's an S reg 1.9.
Many thanks for any help and advice.
Regards
Gareth and Debbie

Doesn't sound like the immobiliser - if that is not being disabled properly, then AFAIK you will get nothing when you turn the key.

Zeds have been known to have a reluctance to start after being left for about 20 mins to half an hour - mine does this - but it just means that it noticeably turns over a few more times before firing up, not that it won't start.

So either you have an exacerbated version of this problem, or something completely different. :P

Just to let anyone know who may come across the same problem, it WAS the starter motor solenoid. I picked up a Bosch one from Camberley Auto Factors this morning for 82 quid plus vat and it is being fitted on Tuesday by my local german car specialist for 100 quid as I don't have time to fit it myself.
Hope that helps anyone who may come across the same problem in the future.

Hi, I have the same problem on my car. Z3 1.9L October 1997.

You say you paid 82£ for the solenoid! I found a complete starter (BOSCH) on the internet for 78£... and there is many for approximatly the same price.

I just wondering if there is a catch somewhere...

£81 with a further £10 discount on this site which is the internet-only subsidiary of Euro Car parts - I use them for most of the bits and pieces for my Z3 and other family cars. Always prompt delivery, very well packaged and arrives by courier as opposed to the general post office. I've bought batteries, oil, antifreeze and all sorts of things that could get damaged and (touch wood) they have always arrived in perfect condition.

DEl is right about Carparts4less, Europarts are behind it and often the prices on Carparts4less site are cheaper, I just ordered front and rear discs, pads, drive belt, oil filter and some sump washers. With their current promotion for orders over £100 I got £15 discount.
Ordered online Saturday, they were delivered before 08:00 on Tuesday.

Thanks guys. As you said the prices are a bit lower.

For the starter, the actual price is 165,50 and you get 84£ back when ou send the old one. So the total is 81-10£ as you said but you need to send the old one and pay for the package.

Here is the one I found:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BOSCH-starter ... 2c696f7392

So, for only a few more quid I can keep the old one and if I can refurbich it ( depending on what is wrong) I can re-sell it.

But i'll keep a look on car parts for less for other parts.

Euro Carparts are running a 30% discount at the moment, look on their website and there is a code to put in

Bosch starter motor 114 - 30% = 79.8
