New Tyre Gel

Post by craignohair »

There's a new company near me which specialises in pumping a new water based gel into tyres which prevents puncture's. As I have 18 inch wheels and only a spacesaver spare I thought it might be worth a try. So yesterday I gave them a call, went round and had all 4 tyres done within 15 mins....and they only charged me £40. I'll let you know how I get on with it.....

I use a similar product called Ultraseal and have done for years.

I use Oki tyre sealant in my trail bikes and not had a single puncture despite hitting some big rock steps and riding across cut branches etc.

It's really for agricultural equipment tractor tyres and quad bikes but seems to work fine on a trail bike. Not sure I'd use it in a car that goes as quick as the Z3 does mind...... :?

This is a company called 'Self Drive Uk' near Chesterfield......I think I will take the Zed out tomorrow and 'give it some' to see how she handles....However, I obviously will keep within the speed limits

If it's anything like Ultraseal you will need to give it time to 'flow' before giving it the beans

Thanks Gary, could you let me know how much time and why please....the reason I ask is because as I have only just had it done I seem to get a very slight shake on the steering wheel, when I rang the company they said it will take a while to spread evenly around the tyres....does this sound correct?

Here is a link to Ultraseal aka Puncturesafe list of FAQs.

http://www.ultrasealgb.co.uk/site/index ... sition=3:3

As the product goes to the bottom of tyre when installed due to that thing called gravity, you are expected to drive a few miles at reduced speed to spread the 'GOO' evenly around the inside of the tyres.

You will probably notice slight out of balance immediately after installation but this will soon disappear with miles.

I didn't think the goo could be used in tyres over 17" with a low profile? according to Ultraseal :|

It was not the diameter which was limited but the aspect ratio.

Read the FAQs that I posted above. They seem to have changed their tune on this somewhat.

The caveat concerning ultra-low profile tyres was due to some tyres having high internal ribs which may stop the product from achieving a full coverage.

I have used Ultraseal and 2 other products. The other products did not mention any limitations.

Thanks for the clarification Frank, this is something I want to look into as having a flat is going to be a bit of a pain.

Well, I have been out today and covered about 50 miles but I do seem to be getting a slight steering wheel vibration at about 45-60 MPH. I will take her out again tomorrow and if its still the same I will be contacting the said company on Monday....I will of course keep you updated

The latest update on my tyre gel is that tomorrow it's coming out....I have been out today and I am still getting a slight wheel shake at about 50 mph. I have again contacted the company who have been great and they said that they have only had this problem once before with a Porshe. It appears that Kumos are one of the only tyre make that are not compatable with this gel....and guess what make of tyres I've got lol.....The company is collecting my Zed tomorrow and are going to take it out.....So now I am looking for something else to prevent a puncture. The task continues.......

A daft question, couldn't you get the wheels rebalanced? :|

Apparently it is nothing to do with balancing. Most tyres are slightly pourous inside but a few are not pourous enough and therefore the gel does not attach itself to the internal walls sufficiently, mine being the latter. :bawl:
