Staggered wheel set up.

Post by mrwhippy »

I'm considering doing a deal on a set of alloys with tyres. Can anybody foresee any issues with fitting the following staggered wheel set up on a '98 Pre-facelift Z3.

Front: 8.5 " 225/40/18 ET35
Rear: 9" 255/35/18 ET35

I think I'm ok, but no harm in checking. I have a slight doubt concerning the width of the rears. Anybody running the same on a slim-hips pre-facelift?

Regards.

I think you will will have a problem with the rears on a 'slim' body.

If my calcs are correct, assuming you have a 7" rim at present you will have an increased wheel projection of 31mm each side + tyre sidewall projection.

Thanks for that.

I am currently running BMW Style 44 which are 17x8 with 225/45/17 tyres.

Using the linked calculator the 18X9 ET35 wheel will extend the outer position by 25mm. Will get a tape measure and take a look.

It'll be close as normally you can get away with 15-20mm extended further out than OEM.

I don't like the pertruded look but you may just get away with it with these but probably won't be certain until mounted.

You could try a ruler against the rim of your current rear and imagine the extra extension from that.

At the end of the day its only 5mm or so extra than what would probably be safe so not much at all.

Well, I took time out to visit the Zed this morning armed with a tape measure.

I came to the conclusion that a further 15mm was the maximum I could go aesthetically on the rears, and that closer to 10mm would be the ideal. As I am already running 8" wide all round, there was little scope for movement on the fronts.

All in all a very useful exercise. Thanks again for the comments.

Hi

I bought a 1998 2.8 Z3 last year. The previous owner had a set of 18's already on the roadster. Manufacturers measurement all tend to off when it comes to wheel widths. Mine appear to be 9" all around, and i am running
Front: 225/40/18
Rear: 255/35/18
With no issues at all. However my Z3 in not lowered. Lowering which i plan to do next year may be an issue. I have attempted to attach pic but the file is too large.

As Forum advice has already saved me from making a wheel mistake once, I thought I'd put the next deal I'm considering up for examination.

AC Schnitzer Type 1 Racing (genuine)
Front 8.5x18 ET38
Rear 9x18 ET45

I think the fronts will be ok, but what about the 9" rears on a slimmer pre-facelift? The seller assures me they will be fine, with no wheel arch mods required.

Has anybody on here got Type-1 RS on their Zed? They are similar to Type 2's but it would be great to see a pic of the 1's on a Zed.

Thanks.

I believe a decent body-shop can "roll" the edges of the rear arches. Could give up to 5-10mm extra space if your that close.

Fronts would be more or less perfect for any Z3.

The rears would be borderline again assuming a narrow bodied Z3.

Using the standard 1.9 OEM wheels as a benchmark (Z star style 35) which are 7ET46 then 9ET45 would actually give you 50mm extra width (ie 2 inches 7 to 9). 9ET45 would split this extra 50mm as an extended 26mm to the archline and 24mm less clearance internally.

Thanks again for the advice guys.

I am currently running type 44's which are 8"ET47. According to a wheel offset website, the ACS RS Type 1's will extend all four wheels outwards by 15mm, which looking at the car should be ok.

The 9" rears would also reduce inner clearance by a further 11mm. This is obviously harder to measure/judge.

All this is academic however, as following a period of negotiation I have now ordered the wheels!

Jonttt - it was finding the ACS 2002 catalogue posted by yourself on 28/06/10 that finally put my mind at rest. The Type 2 Racing wheels 9Jx18 ET45 are listed as a recommended size for Z3's up to 03/99 (rear only). Apparently you can go down to 9Jx18 ET33 on the rear of facelift Z3's.

Helped by the forum again. Glad its back.
